1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

How much did they pay in soft commissions? Including commissions to themselves. I but they could hold expenses steady and just do without as much excessive profit.

Can you lose more than the Initial Margin?

Being long options that are auto-exercised can blow you out, too. There's a thread here about someone who had long GOOG options in an IRA account at expiration that were slightly in the money. GOOG gapped down the following Monday and by the time he was auto-closed out he was at -$8K, which the...

IB down, no way to communicate

A couple weeks ago, some of my computers couldn't connect. I found that in my jts.ini file there was a [Communication] section that said to use gw4.ibllc.com port 4001. On my computers that could connect, there was no [Communication] section at all. Removing that line made things work. Maybe...

    gold top $1138 or $1300

Well, US paper currency is also priced in USD, but its value has gone down over time due to inflation.

    midnight trading and busts

When GCZ9 plummeted by 6% in a matter of minutes early Friday morning, it might have been interesting to go long, but experience with regular stocks pre-market makes me think there's a probability of the trade being busted. Does this happen frequently during out of hours trading at Globex? How...

Gold and the S&P are crashing!

What the mint said was "The US Mint has depleted its current inventory of 2009 American Eagle 1 ounce bullion coins due to the continued strong demand." and that sales would resume "once sufficient inventories ...can be acquired to meet market demand". News articles said this was bullish for...

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

My mistake, DeFazio's bill is mainly to raise money, although he is making it a point to penalize people he thinks have ill-gotten gains.

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

This would make sense if the main reason for the transaction tax is to get more money for other projects and thus everyone should tighten their belts etc., but as I understand it, the transaction tax is being pushed as a "sin tax" whose desired effect is to reduce the number of instances of the...

Americans' tax burden is lightest in developed world

Now you're just trolling. The dollar gets devalued year over year due to inflation, and day by day due to the Fed's current (and long standing) policy. Unless you're going on a European vacation or are a big importer of foreign-made goods, the plummeting dollar is good for you. If you sell...

Americans' tax burden is lightest in developed world

A lot of liberals want to raise the taxes on the extremely rich. One kos columnist proposed taxing the highest 1% at 10% of their entire wealth per year until the unemployment rate goes back below 5%, saying "they're rich enough that they won't miss it". That seems to be the common thread, that...

Gold and the S&P are crashing!

I woke up around 2AM Friday and decided to charge my iPhone. I peeked at the futures and thought "the quotes must be messed up", since the reaction to the Dubai news on Thursday was for gold to actually go up a bit. So I went back to sleep. Should've bought! Still made out OK because I was long...

What happens to my GTC coverd call order if stock gaps up?

During the day they'll certainly try to pay you less than intrinsic if the option spread is large. A few years ago I had DOW $50 puts. I put in an order to sell them for $5. I didn't get filled until DOW was down to $44.85.

What happens to my GTC coverd call order if stock gaps up?

What they will often do is artificially widen the spread at the open, e.g. make it .20x.60, just so they'll be able to pay .20 for your options. If you do get paid less than intrinsic value, call up your broker and complain.

Windows 7 vulnerable to 8 out of 10 viruses !!!

All Sophos showed was that 8 out of the 10 viruses installed themselves without triggering UAC. MSFT ought to fix UAC, but UAC is more like a "sudo" program than an anti-malware program.

Trading the SPY as a newbie?

Sure. Spend a few weeks paper-trading SPY options in a demo account. The most important thing is to see how implied volatility varies from hour to hour and day to day. One of the most common surprises to people new to trading options is when they buy call options on a big down day, and the stock...

    GLD or TBT?

Ads predicting gold will go to $2500 have been around since at least Y2K. Their existence should not be used as an indicator of gold's future price.

Daytrading patten rule any way around it?

Once your price point is reached, you can sell in-the-money options to lock in your gain. Then , the next day, sell the stock and buy back the options. Of course, this could more than double the commissions you have to pay, so find a broker with low commissions, or at least one who will let you...

Win 7 64 bit first impressions

I'm waiting until SP1, as usual, but that article is full of FUD and lacking in any facts. And it's not "a totally redesigned OS"; it's just a retooled Vista. And they question a $150 3-pack upgrade as being reasonable "given the current economy"? Give us a break.

Win 7 64 bit first impressions

Check out all your apps for 64-bit compatibility. Winsxs works well, but there are apps like UPS Worldship (not a trading app, I know) that will simply refuse to install on a 64-bit system.
