A Truth on Trading.**Everyone, please Read**

murray - fair enough. i had a few things in my advantage: 1) i had been trading from the security of my job for a few years before that. 2) i was able to make money during those years except one (i didn't include those in my numbers because i wasn't trading as a job) because i was dumb, and...

A Truth on Trading.**Everyone, please Read**

well, i've had one down year in the 8 since i've been trading, and if i had my current brokerages / pricing-per-trade/share system, i'd have zero. so i don't know why *you* think that's far fetched. mind you, i've had a couple years in the 8 that i could have been working a non-trading job...

Short Google, MA, AAPL AND RIMM

that was on june 7. those levels weren't "much lower" in a few days. that is a WRONG CALL. there were plenty of people short TASR, LHSP and a ton of others, and capitulated when they couldn't take the pressure. and the stocks eventually cratered. guess what? they get brownie points...

Switching to futures from stocks, can anyone recommend a reliable broker?

i have both IB and tradestation. only trade equities. if you're doing backtesting, definitely take tradestation. i find executions to be the same. better customer service at TS. i can't quantify it easily (outside of how their margin requirements are handled, which favors IB), but i...

    Do folks like TDAmeritrade?

it's been inconsistent the past month, and is down again now. no, it's not my main brokerage (one of several) but i found out it was down when i was going to enter my stop. fortunately, my position isn't large, and i'll hedge it elsewhere if it goes through what would have been my...

Why Trading Should Not Be A Career Choice

really? i must have avoided the threads where that comes up (granted, i don't read most threads). i thought what most people have said, and what i agree with, is: don't jump headfirst into it - trade on the side from your day job, build up a nest egg, etc. be careful if you make the jump...

    poker questions...

my background: played poker online for 2 years. have played on several sites (stars, party, paradise, bodog, pacific), mainly NLHE SNGs at $10. ROI of 17%. i am NOT looking at it (poker) as a career. i've read HOH (all), sklansky's earlier ones, SS 1/2, and some other assorted books...

Why Trading Should Not Be A Career Choice

nice post, gnome. i'm a n00b (8 yrs full time) compared to you, though i remember having a radio shack computer which didn't have enough memory to sort 800 names alphabetically, and i had to break it down to 2 400 name lists. there's some reasons in the original post why a person should be...

Short Google, MA, AAPL AND RIMM

ok, cool. sometimes, msgs can get misconstrued, or meaning misinterpreted, etc. i also hate having someone post what 'real traders' do when in fact, real traders tend to do the opposite of many of those things.

list of today (6/11) unusual vol stocks?

does anyone have a list of unusual volume stocks for today? i usually get my list EOD from hottrend, but because hottrend was down this morning, there's no list of the stocks that were active then. so, if anyone's got a list of unusual volume stocks (like 50+ or so) from this morning, could...

    My Goal for 2007: Break-Even

i see you're doing better on your trades recently. good job! discipline, and the psychological part of trading, is so important - you can have great trades going, and one undiscipline day or trade can blow things up. good trading!

Short Google, MA, AAPL AND RIMM

well...i wasn't knocking those who have a day job who trade. i started that way - had traded for several years before i left, and *still* should have waited another year or so. in some instances, working a day job and swing trading can be really beneficial, if the opportunity presents itself...

Short Google, MA, AAPL AND RIMM

ok. it's 2 more days. they're not at much lower levels. it's not a problem to be wrong, since everyone is - it is a problem to constantly claim definitively you're 'right' on something, esp. when not. and, please, stop lecturing people on being 'real traders'. it's insulting to others who...

CNBC stock picking show defrauded by contestants

thanks for posting this; cnbc's barely made mention of the holdup for the past few weeks. no, i'm not in it - was curious as to 'how' people could have circumvented the rules. now i know. by the way, i'm not sure if they still do it this way, but many firms - in their analysis of "here's...

best prop firm to short stocks?

penson is average / average+ on $10+ stocks. since they (generally) don't allow shorting of under $5 stocks, there's no comparison for them on the cheapies.

Mark Conway "professional stock Trading" Sentenced to 7 Years in jail

since he started in '01, my guess would be he didn't see the signs of continuing breakdown in '01 (pre 9/11), ignored stops... took a big hit after 9/11... and then stayed short for a long time after, thus absorbing hits all the way up. the key thing from my guess though - ignoring stops.

Mark Conway "professional stock Trading" Sentenced to 7 Years in jail

thanks for posting that. i consider his book really good as well. according to an old article in google's cache, "telling them his fund would follow a market-timing strategy. Instead, he allegedly deviated from that strategy and lied to investors about it, creating false documents in...

Why am i better at day trading?

i'm a much better daytrader than i am swing trader. i can teach others the swing part, but i don't have the discipline to maintain the positions and let my winners run far enough. and i know others who can swing trade well, but aren't very good at daytrading. i know how much risk i can...

    question on 80s and takeovers?

i wasn't trading then, and wanted to hear from someone who was. i read a quote today about private equity only is this active when things are undervalued. i thought p.equity would only be this active as the prelude to things getting toppy, and that the constant merger/acquisitions were signs...
