So this confirms they don't even share data with themselves :)

New to USA - what broker for retirement accounts?

I've had many brokers over the last 20 years, and for conservative money that I won't be trading much, I like Scottrade. The problem with most brokers is that they are constantly getting bought and sold. You sign up with one set of rules, and all of a sudden someone else owns your brokerage and...

    Option Approval Levels

I agree with blakpacman. It may be sort of like being an accredited investor: they ask you because they have to, but they are not obligated to check up on you. When I started trading, I received a lower level of privileges from the broker, but then immediately (the same day) went back to the...

    Options vs Futures

Agreed, that is why I have illustrated 2 ways of removing volatility from consideration and turning it into a purely directional trade (with some leverage).

    Options vs Futures

I disagree with the above. There are a couple of reasonable ways to get leverage on a stock using options. A synthetic will give you about 5x leverage. Go out to May or July. Buy some at-the-money calls--I guess that would be the 44 strike calls right now. Then sell an equal number of 44...

3% down payments being used at lowest level in 10 years

I heard an ad on the radio the other day from a mortgage broker. They offer to pay your PMI if you get a loan through them. The problem is not the 3% down. It's the fact of giving a loan to people who only have 3% down. They are generally not the best credit risks. Not to mention the...

Time and money for your first year or two.

This is only a suggestion, probably not for everyone, so take it or leave it. It's hard to make a living trading when you have little capital to put in and you are likely going to lose some of it anyway. I agree with the person who said to go ahead and start, but start small. However, it may...

Your opinions on "Socially responsible investing" and "Divestment from fossil fuels"

Yes, agreed. There are companies I have invested in willingly even though I hated doing business with them. Bank of America and Comcast come to mind.

Your opinions on "Socially responsible investing" and "Divestment from fossil fuels"

No, I don't think they can depress the price of a stock. I think the effect of greed is much stronger than the effect of responsibility.

Your opinions on "Socially responsible investing" and "Divestment from fossil fuels"

I know a few of the socially responsible crowd. And believe me, you sound just as dumb to them as they sound to you. They do have some legitimate points. As I buy oil stocks, I'm helping to put $$ into the pockets of those who rape the earth and take advantage of people in less fortunate...

    "Scaling out" is inferior behavior

I'm interested then, in how you might refute a couple of examples. One is that a reason to take part off could be to ensure that I at least break even. I buy 200 shares of XYZ today. It doubles tomorrow. I sell 100 shares. I keep the other 100, believing it may double again. Here, I have a...

    "Scaling out" is inferior behavior

For the record, I do not scale out. But that is only because my system does not include that practice. All trading techniques should be viewed as part of a system. If you change entry, exit, stops, trade management, etc. then you are changing a part of the system, which potentially affects...

Failing traders: the merits of pursuing poker instead

Yes, we exist. It can be done. Yes, longer time frames are easier to work with. The average losing trader would probably be better off buying a mutual fund or stuffing money in their mattress than playing poker. I hope no one will take that advice. But, permit me to give a little pep talk...

Driverless cars will mean the end of mass car ownership

So tell me why I would want to ride in a car that 10,000 other people were just in. I'd have to disinfect it before I could sit in it. Who knows what is in there.

Who was it that said if you redistributed all the money evenly, the same people would have it back in a year or two?

    Motivation and Encouragement

Speak for yourself. I suspect many of us could care less about the instruments we trade. I trade only to make money and that is plenty of incentive for me. I enjoy trading and would probably keep trading if I were a billionaire, but only if I could make money at it.
