Study: Tax Cuts For The Rich Do Not Spur Economic Growth

Even if there were correlation it would be meaningless. You can't compare across time periods without statistically controlling for economic/historical variation and measuring the impact of "published" vs. "effective" tax rates. 1. The period of 1945-1965 was unique in American history. It...

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

In my discussions with people (including a telephone conversation with a congressional staff member), there are two points that seem to resonate the most: 1. The man-on-the-street ends up paying most of the FTT bill. 2. The most effective way to tax the banks is to directly tax the banks...

Also, remind them of unintended consequences. The "luxury tax" is a great example: In 1990 the idea of a luxury tax on yachts had 80% support from the public. College professors all across America clamored for the tax in the name of “fairness.” Under sustained public pressure...

Did you send the engineer the website? http://financialtransactiontaxes.com/ It won't change everyone's mind, but I've used the website to get pro-FTT people to reconsider their position. Don't just argue, show them the research.

I think it's best to use very specific examples: At current Value (1435) ES futures FTT would be $43.05 round trip. Or perhaps round to 1400 ($42 FTT round-trip), but it should be a value that anyone who trades it would instantly recognize.

Republican Vote Fraud and Crime Annals

Not only that, it's the same people saying the same thing over-and-over again. P&R has become little more than an echo chamber of far-left and far-right politics. I'm going to confine my further ET postings to the thread on the FTT (an issue of real importance to traders), which is the reason...

Got a match? 55% of Greek young people unemployed.

My wife and I were in Greece last summer. The magnitude of the unemployment problem is shocking. Their economy has been contracting at a rate of 5% per year. They're in an economic death spiral with no way out. Parents are telling their children to leave the country if they want to have a...

My take on the elections ...

Any "unselfish" CEO who fails to increase share price will quickly be shown the door. Stockholders will dump their holdings and invest in other companies. The stock price will fall even further. The Board of Directors will fire the CEO. CEOs have one job -- increase value for shareholders. If...

Mitt Romney Has 'Casual Relationship With The Truth And Reality'

A while back I saw an interview with a private equity executive. He said people are often unhappy with the deal after the fact because they have short memories. He says these "unhappy" deals are often the result of the following series of events which clients need to be reminded of: a) A...

The next time a bank or banker gets caught in a scandal the FTT volume will get turned up to high again. It will happen. I guarantee it. Demands for the FTT will headline the New York Times and the Huffingtonpost on a daily basis. The fact that the FTT hurts the man-on-the-street or that the FTT...

it is as impossible for an individual to acquire personal property without society.

No, because I don't know what his total taxes are. When I say 40%, I'm including federal income taxes plus state income taxes, property taxes and sales taxes, all of which are high in California.

it is as impossible for an individual to acquire personal property without society.

Most people agree that we need taxes and we need some form of government. The real question is "how much?" I already "share" over 40% of my income. That's too much.

it is as impossible for an individual to acquire personal property without society.

Thomas Paine's "Agrarian Justice" was an interesting piece of work in that it was more specific than many of his other papers. He proposed an individual/societal relationship that wasn't an all-or-nothing proposition. Paine felt that society contributed a measurable amount to an individual's...

Not only is Geithner leaving, but the rumor is that Lael Brainard (also strongly against the FTT) is leaving Treasury to go back to being a professor at MIT. Without Geithner and Brainard, the FTT is definitely in play at the Treasury Dept.
