Best Language for developing a backtesting platform

You know, this is starting to sound like a good plan. 1) Build a trading system using decent software architecture principles, and learn new languages/techniques in the process. 2) Develop trading strategies with system. 3) If trading strategies turn out to be wildly profitable trading...

Best Language for developing a backtesting platform

Yes, definitely. But, I am not in a rush, just doing it on the side as a hobby. So building a data collection server in Erlang (as an example) in order to learn that language would carry other benefits. It's just a way to hedge my risk as I might spend time tinkering with strategies only to...

Best Language for developing a backtesting platform

Thanks for your input on this. I spent a bit of time recently playing with Julia, Erlang, and golang recently. Julia actually seems to be quite a lovely language; reminds me a bit of Python. Scientific oriented, was able to write very terse and efficient code. Go is obviously making a...

    Stop predicting

Like this answer, but few things: 1) Looking for swing trades 2) Current market environment (US stock indexes) is quite unfavorable for counter-trend (short) swing trades. Things could get much worse for the bears before they get better (max pain scenario).

Sounds good, but I would still be worried about the unforeseen flash crash or flash melt-up. This might render a stop ineffective on a large, risky position size.

Would like to ask if you could stay on topic. Thanks.

You are right, looking at 1792 or so on ES for tonight/tomorrow... damn! Don't see extremely solid new longs, that's why. Maybe sidelines is wise instead of short. Sounds good, will give it a shot. Thanks man. I'm not losing risk capital, just doing some scalps here and there while...

    Stop predicting

Cool. Will try taking some non counter-trend trades, and see how it works out. Might be a good way to fix the root problem (simple behavior mod). No frelling way this is a unique problem (tendency to counter trend trade, predict early, etc, etc).

This method sounds nice, given my style. Will give it a try when the next opportunity arises. Thanks.

Not sure if this belongs in psychology. If not, my apologies. After reviewing my trading records from this year, and after thinking about my 'bad beats' this past year, I was hoping to get some input from some of the more experienced traders on the forum. The two trades that I am hoping...

Looking at Russell futures early next week (Sunday, possibly early Monday) 1101-1103 or so downtrend resist. for a possible shot.

    Key reversal

November 7, 2013 Key reversal day in the works? ES and YM hit all time highs only to have a very strong downside reversal. NQ and EMD broke down from tight multi-week trading range. Just looks like every rally of any kind is getting sold. For me, will take a few shots tomorrow and...

Futures trading wipe out 1/4 of my account

Glad you posted this. Important to reinforce what really matters in leveraged trading (imo, anyway): - Anything can happen in the markets; risk management plan must account for this reality - Adding to a loser requires a very large capital allocation per contract (i.e. you probably should...

The sad state of opensource ATS solutions

TD Ameritrade's API looks fairly nice IMO. http based, for both request/response and streaming. Hoping they add futures, though. Haven't used it yet, but read through sample code and the documentation and it is very straightforward. When time allows, hoping to cut my teeth with it and...

    Murrica's Outlook: Nasdaq & Russell E-mini's

<img src="http://i.imgur.com/QvMDF0P.png"> Would not be surprised to see Russell and S&P500 mini futures break these 'support' lines made up out of thin air.. see the NYSE index hit 10,200+ and shake the tree before finally swinging down. Picking turns in advance or at the 'inflection point'...

    ES Journal - 2013

Still watching the square root of negative one resistance lines on various indexes... will need to move the goal posts on the short swing idea for ES. Stop was not hit this week but bulls did not give up. Risk is fairly clearly defined but the interactions between the instruments being...
