incredible 1.14 mil housholds with over $5 mil assets

True, but a lot rich folk's home equity has been borrowed out of the home and made it's way into other assets that do count.

incredible 1.14 mil housholds with over $5 mil assets

I know quite a few people who have net worths in excess of 1 MM. And except for me, they are all under 40. Just consider anyone that bought a decent house (500k+) in the last few years. They could be millionaires pretty easily. Think California. The study probably also considers retirees...

Cost to hold long/short portfolio IB?

Hi, does anyone know how a long/short portfolio is margined at IB? Not the risk component but the financing costs? Let's say I'm holding 100k of stocks (diversified, highly correlated with SP500) and I'm short 100k of SPY. My best guess is I pay the borrowing rate on the long stock and...

Interactive Brokers: STP With 1 Week Notice?

The STP device they sent me is about the size of a Lexus keyless entry keychain. Maybe a little bigger. The ones that look like calculators are the older ones. FYI, I have an Adviser account and it's not actually making me authenticate to login to TWS. It only requests the passphrase when you...

    Southwest is the worst airline

If you fly a lot, try to concentrate it as much as possible on 1 mainline carrier AA NW DL. You will eventually earn elite status that allows upgrades to first class. Makes all the difference in the world if you can afford it.

IB no interest on first 10K rule, what do you do with the money?

This is only a factor if you have 10k in your account and only do daytrades. If you tie up the 10k in an ETF and want to hold a trade overnight you will pay margin interest that is much higher than the interest earned on the ETF.

Is it possible to set up own prop and borrow from banks?

The OP might consider a retail account with portfolio margin, say at IB. This will give you roughly 6-1 overnight on outrights and more if your portfolio is hedged. Unless you are trying to compete with other prop firms there is really no reason to try to build your own firm. Also, if your...

Fidelity's Bolton Says Markets Ready to Fall, Shorts Shares

What was the increase in the notional value of the house? 3k was just your down payment, right? If you had bought Bolton's fund on 20:1 leverage (common for real estate loans) you would have made millions too.

    Interactive Brokers vs. Vonage

I hate all these internet services with auto-renew or monthly billing. You try to cancel, and they either make it really hard, or they offer a month or two free and you forget to call back and cancel later. For all, it is best to make your initial attempt to cancel, then follow it up...

$14,000 per year field worker buys $720,000 home

Why shouldn't he? If he has very little assets, his lender, partnered with the US Bankruptcy Trustee, is giving him a free option on real estate prices. Traveler

Automated $ Transfer System (ACATS) at IB

Mine worked fine. 2 different IRA accts from Etrade to IB. This was 2 years ago. Make sure the names match *exactly* and that all positions held are eligible. You do it online. They won't accept other brokers paper forms requesting transfers.

Would you manage OPM without an asset management fee?

Negotiate for whatever you can. If the profit sharing % will cover your incremental costs of managing the money and leave you with a profit, you have nothing to lose.
