Spreads don't have to be "overcome." They're not a "cost," unless you're trading with a forex bucketshop that forces you to buy the ask and sell the bid. If you use a market order to enter and a limit order posted ahead to exit, you're no longer paying the spread, at least on winning trades...

You watch the DOM and the time and sales. If you see prints going off for volume, but the bids keep coming back/refresh, you know that limit orders are "soaking up" the market orders (or marketable limit orders, same thing for what you're talking about).
