A brief take on today's action.

Volume was exceptionally low yesterday, comparable to the Friday after Thanksgiving. Seemed like more of a lack of buying as opposed to heavy selling interest. This really is a sentiment drop more than anything. The average consensus for GDP got bumped up to 3% yesterday, earnings are void of...

Robinhood offering 3% on savings, absolutely amazing!

SIPC only "protects brokerage firm accounts that are holding cash for the purpose of buying and selling securities." They are marketing these as checking and savings accounts. Are they excluded? Robinhood is a member of SIPC, but they are not FDIC insured. If they did go under, would SIPC...

    So what works then?

I only trade the ES futures options these days, and with the VIX where it is and the skittish mode we're in - pretty much a week or less. I'm looking to put on some Monday expiry spreads this afternoon. You need enough potential in the initial setup to overcome any adjustment hits. The...

    So what works then?

I've been trading options for over 20 years. I feel like I've tried everything at some point in various forms. At times, everything works...at other times, nothing works. And nothing works all the time. You seemed to have traded enough to know how options work and the risks associated with...

Ever a good time to sell option premium on S&P 500?

I would suggest you consider butterflies. :D

This fellow has been posting for a while with the same type of questions. First I thought he was new etc... Now I'm starting to believe he might be messing with us.

    IB Down??

I had a connectivity issue between 5:30 and 6pm Eastern time for a few minutes. Unless this is something new, I wasn't aware they did server resets at this time? The server resets have always been overnight in the wee hours.

    One random trader's own thoughts

I think the volatility will absolutely continue. Just the last few days is a great example. You have an important meeting that took place with various interpretations and accounts of the meaning of what was said or what actually happened. The market goes from euphoric to downtrodden based on...

President Trump's meeting with Xi this weekend

I think the early move will be positive into Sunday night. We'll see what Asia does overnight. As for Monday...who knows. It's positive because it's buying time...and the two sides are reportedly talking about a deal...and China is allegedly buying a bunch more stuff from us. At the end of...

    IB post expiry margin question

What were the positions and where was the market when you saw that? Most of the time the IB algo is correct on the lookahead margin, but I've had a few cases where it was way off.

Thomas Peterffy, founder and CEO of Interactive Brokers.

Keep in mind...a significant portion of that $25B is commissions I've paid to them over the years.

I was short a 2720 Call on Friday, and the ES closed at 2722, yet I wasn't assigned.

You can always get an answer here. If you are going to be trading these things and riding them right up until expiration, you need to have the CME Daily Bulletin bookmarked and get familiar with it. The fixing price and the settlement sometimes seem way off from where the market was at that...

https://www.cmegroup.com/daily_bulletin/current/Section47_E_Mini_S_And_P_500_Call_Options.pdf This is only the link for the most recent day. Historical bulletins are available elsewhere on the CME page for the trailing 90 days.

I was short a 2720 Call on Friday, and the ES closed at 2722, yet I wasn't assigned.

You did not get assigned. While the futures settlement was indeed at 2724.30, that was at 4:15. At 4pm, the CME sets the "fixing price" which settles the weeklies. According to the CME Daily Bulletin, the 4pm fixing price was 2719.64 and the 2720C line for EOW1 reads "CAB" - expired...

We are now in front of door #237...

Personally I think it's unlikely to cause much of a move one way or the other unless something completely shocking and unexpected happens. Like maybe the dems getting the Senate or something no one is calling for. The market typically likes a divided Congress because of the gridlock it...
