eSignal wish list : the dedicated thread

I have been with Esignal for about 3 years, and for the money, have been pleased. A couple of things on my wish list: 1. In my old job, I had CQG. It was terrific, but Esignal's advanced charts have made it competitive in features, and at a lower cost (last time I checked). One thing I...

How much backtesting do I need?

I use daily bars, and my standard procedure is to test a system over a period that includes an up market, a down market, and a sideways/rangebound market. We have had all 3 in the past 4 years, so that is currently my benchmark. I look at data going back to about 8/98, or about 1000 days/bars...

    Swing trading

I responded to this post earlier, but my response seems to have "vaporized", so I'll try to say it again......TC2000 does allow you to customize your search/scans pretty well. Whether it will do exactly what you need, only you can evaluate. The service is cheap, so you have liitle to lose by...

    Swing trading

swtrader, Here's my .02 worth. Besides discipline, which you seem to feel you have, the MOST important factor that will contribute to your success is matching your style to your personality. You seem to feel that you are better suited for swing trading. Others are making a good case for...

    Day Trading Aint Easy

Gee, he's only been in the WSJ twice? Bernie Ebbers is in the WSj almost every day....That must make Bernie a REALLY smart, cool guy!! And if you knew anything about trading, you would know that being a grad from Wharton, or Kellogg (no Vinny, I don't mean "Tony the Tiger"), or MIT doesnt...

    Day Trading Aint Easy

No, I don't need a monkey...you are doing just fine, thank you.....As for shortboy's 1999 record, you didn't mention it either... Your post referred only to someone who has been short in the worst bear market in at least 25 years, and acted like "shortboy" was some kind of genius for making...

    Day Trading Aint Easy

Geez, the Nasdaq is down about 75% in 2.5 years. A monkey with the WSJ and a handfull of darts could have done well shorting the market the last couple of years.

    DT-waw's general thoughts on trading

I sorry, I have to respectfully disagree. First of all, EVERYTHING in the future is uncertain. Since it's "baseball day" lets use it for an analogy. If the Yankees are 25 games above .500 at the All-Star break, are you more comfortable betting on them to win the World Series, or the Cubs...

    DT-waw's general thoughts on trading

To answer your first question, I guess I would say "either". When I refer to a strict methodology, I mean a method where you have specific, definable, rules that identify a setup, get you in the market, and then get you out with a pre-determined loss, or a profit, or after some logical time...

    DT-waw's general thoughts on trading

Between #3 and #4 above, I would insert (call it #3.5) the following: "Risketh not thy whole wad". Great stop discipline alone will not save you. If you are risking too much of your equity on each trade, you can stick to your stops religiously, and still blow out if (when) you hit a cold streak...

    Day Trading Aint Easy

I dunno, call me crazy, but have you considered finding a method that gives you an edge BEFORE you start trading? Performing surgery on yourself without knowing how is a painful way to learn how to do it. Since you didnt say you are paper trading, I have to assume you are trading with real (and...

    Kansas City

Is the original Strouds still there? I lived in KC in the early '80's and loved it. I'm craving a burger from Fred P. Ott's at the moment! A few years ago, I was at the Stroud's up north, that building in the '80's, I think was "Sandy's Oak Ridge Manor". Nice, but not the charm of the original.

so you want to trade against me, huh?

Personally, I could care less about how you prepare, or what you do. I am not competing against you. I have a well-tested and profitable method that makes me consistent money. The only thing that can hurt me is to deviate from my method. For that reason, my discipline (or lack of) is by far the...

    Market Wizards Rumor!

I havent heard anything....but I'm not trying to find out, either. I am much more interested in what bad things can happen to ME as a trader, and ways to prevent them, than in getting caught up in what bad things may be happening to other traders. OK to observe and learn from others trading...

    How do I start?

The MOST important question, IMO, is : Do you have a plan? Since your time is limited, swing trading is a more practical strategy than day-trading for you. Regardless..... Do you have a concrete method of entering and exiting trades that you could describe in a few sentences? Does your method...

    Best and Worst CNBC Commercials

Ok, for the worst: In the "archives" is the 3 smug, cool-dude office workers talking about how they need stochastics, level-2, blah-blah-blah..and how silly it would be to refer to just the bid/ask without checking the depth of the market (ha ha ha), while the non-trading office moron comes...

    Trailing stops now at IB

OK, on further review, as they say around the NFL, I certainly can see the benefit of a stop limit order to ENTER a trade. I was narrow-mindedly focusing on using a stop as an exit mechanism is that last post.

    Trailing stops now at IB

Agreed, you can make a stop order a "stop limit" order. I was referring to a basic stop order in my last post. Don't know if IB will let you use a stop limit. I've never used one. IMO, when you're wrong, you're wrong. Get out now, and don't try to get cute to save a few pennies.
