Is the bookstore dead, or is AMZN just evil?

Exactly. It's called competition. When a company finds a better way of delivering a product or service existing companies will feel the pain much like Blockbuster (as someone already mentioned) is feeling the pain from NFLX and now Redbox. Why on earth would you pay 5 bucks for a movie and 8...

    Fund and stock any different?

Yes and No. If you buy one stock you expose yourself to market and stock risk, so that's the yes. If you buy roughly 20 stocks in diversified industries you've pretty much created your own mutual fund, which is the no. I don't invest in mutual funds at all. I buy a number of stocks and...

    Mortgage Payments

There is no fee. Yes, there have been a few times when the bank was slow to withdraw the money. I think there is a 15 day grace period where no penalty is assessed and I've never gotten that close. If they're late it's by a few days at the most. I just keep an eye on it.

    Mortgage Payments

Set up electronic withdrawals and make additional payments and it will solve this problem. I do the same thing you do and have my mortgage with a big publicly traded bank. On the 1st of each month my scheduled payment get withdrawn from my checking account, regardless of the additional manual...

Pentagon "Doesn't know where the money is going."

Funny, they don't have a problem tracking "incoming appropriations." It's just the outgoing they're having difficulty with. Things like this don't happen on accident.

Anyone trade just on news flow? NO TECHNICALS!

That will not work over time. 2008....good news came out frequently even though it was a shit market. Market would move straight up and 100%+ retracements would occur almost all the time. I faded good news all the time during 2007/2008. 2009 rolls in and that stopped working. Had to start...

Anyone trade just on news flow? NO TECHNICALS!

That's not really true. The market reacts to news quickly. Example, Europe fixing bank/Greece crisis and the Fut's will gap up pretty big and you won't catch it but after that the market basically trends up the rest of the day. Every dip is buyable so on a day like that you don't need any...

is this a great country or what...

I think I posted on this thread a while back but I can't recall exactly. Jumping jackflash is a fraud, unless, of course, somewhere along the line he acknowledged that his 85k day was done on a simulator. "jerry_Trader" doesn't appear on the bottom right corner of your platform if you're...

Michael Lewis Article on Public Pensions

Did a tax return last year for a retired Chicago firefighter. His annual pension was 72k per year. Most people don't get up to that level during their working lifetime yet public employees reach that level well before they retire and receive a very handsome pension after they retire. Who is...

Buffet was wrong has now lost millions!

Servicing their customers LOL. Yeah, servicing them by charging them fees. This is only a start of what banks are going to do to screw people out of their money. http://www2.wspa.com/news/2011/sep/30/new-bank-america-debit-fee-has-customers-looking-o-ar-2490091/

    tradingmarkets

The stuff these folks sell is a minor tweaked indicator or two that already exists and they put it in a box and ask outrageous prices for them. Here's the deal...successful trading isn't based on an indicator or a "system." It's based on the trader running the system. There is no...

    Divergence Trading Works

You do see the one toward the EOD that didn't work, right? Divergences are like every other indicator...sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. It's the trader interpreting the signals that will determine profit or loss.

Poll: What is your Win Rate

Well said by Eckhardt. Some guy -- I forget who it was -- posted his trading results with a win rate of 42% but he was up 50%. That's a pure sign of cutting your losers fast and letting your winners run. Easier said than done.

Building a track record for raising money

No, it's not necessary. When I launched my fund I started with a small number of clients/AUM and didn't do an audit until I was ready to raise some serious capital. An audit does not have to be in real time. Historical records are sufficient.

    Why I quit algorithmic trading

Never give up and find a way to adapt to changing market conditions. The reason traders lose their edge is because the market conditions change and the trader sticks with the same strategy that will no longer work. The transition from 2008 to 2009 is a perfect example. We went from a high...

    Why I quit algorithmic trading

Sharpen your tools. Everyones edge dies when the market conditions change. There are really only two types of markets -- volatile and non-volatile. They require 2 radically different strategies. Measuring volatility should be at the top of your list.

    Why I quit algorithmic trading

I've been writing code in C++ for about 15 years and I have to agree with just about everything you've said, especially point #6. It's been my experience that programming trading apps are better served as trading aids rather than trading bots. One of my most valuable apps is a tool that...

The Dangers of x2 and x3 leveraged ETF's

This is true only in theory. A leveraged 2x Bear ETF does not consistently deliver a 2% return on a 1% decline of the underlying but your point is well taken.

    The Bankruptcy of NFLX (Netflix)

Correct, BBI tried to compete with them but since NFLX was a first arriver (ala, eBay) they developed name recognition with mail delivery that BBI couldn't compete with, along with the logistics edge you mention. BBI had the "return to the store" advantage but they had to price the mail order...
