Looking for a stock trading company

Many brokers will let you buy baskets of stocks for a round number like, as you said, $1000. You should check if the broker charges you full commission on each individual stock in the basket... that could add up to a lot with some brokers. There's no $25K margin rule that I know of...

    QMH06/QMJ06 spread

The difference between these two has varied by around .25 today. The April future is getting more expensive relative to the March. Is this common when the near future is about to expire, or are there other reasons for this today?

    IB Horror Story

Looks like the original poster split. I did a google search and found it at http://groups.google.com/group/misc.invest.options/browse_thread/thread/4547258b5204313a - it's a Usenet reposting of a Terry's Tips newsletter.

Does IB take responsibility? An amazing story

What do you mean by this? Do you mean that because you lost $11K that IB made $11K? Did they take the opposite side of your trade each time?

    IB's Trouble tickets

I think it's a great idea. Once when a phone rep told me to request a form by email, I submitted that web-based send-an-email-to-IB form three times, over a period of a couple weeks, before getting a response. I don't know whether they didn't send a reply or I didn't receive it. But a ticket...

    Snow, Oil & Gas

heating oil is used mostly in the northeast, which is supposed to get pretty warm over the next few days, so I wouldn't expect heating oil and crude to go up because of the weather. natural gas is used to heat in the midwest, so it may go up if a cold wave hits and there are supply shortages.

    Best Options Exchange (Poll)

PHLX used to have a rule that once an order got to them, you couldn't cancel it for 2 minutes.

    Odd Lots?

Hey, at least IB will route a marketable order to the exchange with the best price. My experience with Ameritrade has been that (1) they'll route the order to an exchange of their choosing, even if this locks or crosses the market, and (2) if due to fast-changing conditions you happen to enter...

What broker should i trade through?

Note that Schwab charges extra for orders larger than 1000 shares, unless you're a large customer (30 trades/quarter or $1M in the account).

    Bloomberg vs SFCC

Speaking of volatile, look at Friday's action. Another negative article came out in Bloomberg (Grassley requests documents). Stock dropped $3.90 (15%) in 4 minutes on volume of 330K, then rose $2.94 in 3 minutes on volume of 220K. Volume for the day was 2 million, which this stock sees about...

    Newbie

This presentation is pretty useful for beginners. Note the part where he talks about how the underlying stock can move in your desired direction yet the price of the options can still go down. http://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/general/education/webinars/oic-nov-2005.html Volatility and...

    intraday margin

That's not normal, however, Schwab once told me that if you have marks against you because you've exceeded your daytrading buying power more than a certain number of times, then for some period of time you're put into a penalty box: when you close an order intraday your DTBP is not replenished...

    Online broker for dial-up???

All the platforms I've used (IB, Schwab, Ameritrade, E*Trade) let you choose the set of symbols you want to monitor and the type of monitoring you wish (real-time quotes/volume/greeks;time&sales; level II; charts). In addition, they all offer trading from a web page, and since you don't...

    Online broker for dial-up???

When I visit my brother, I'm stuck on dialup. I've found that both IB and Schwab (StreetSmartPro) work fine on dialup as far as looking at real-time quotes in your watchlists and placing orders. Backfilled charts will be a bit sluggish, but when my connection has a bandwidth of a bit over 4000...

help - natural gas on i/b

I don't know what the QG index is (the one that's $441), although it looks it's the price of 50 million BTUs. QG e-miny futures are for 2500 million BTUs. The quotes you see for natural gas that are around $8.79 are for 1 million BTUs; so the QG e-miny futures have a multiplier of 2500. So...

laptop without dedicated graphics card ok for trading?

Dell has been discounting their 9300 laptop recently, down to around $1200, because they are about to introduce the 9400. There are 2 types of 9300 displays, one of which is 17" 1920x1200.
