    First Year Review

I've made money since I started trading SPY over the past year. I go for small profits; most of the time .10 to .30 on a trade of 300 to 500. I agree it can seem random at times. I usually wait for the market to run up (or down) intra-day when I often enter looking for a reversal. Short or...

why we can not use a free e-mail account?

My original post wasn't 100% clear I guess. I meant in the "old days", when using a "local" ISP (at the time I lived in Michigan), if you travelled out of your local area it would have required dialing in long distance. I agree lots of progress has been made and that with Earthlink, AOl, etc...

    Higher market and lower volume

But one can also make the case there aren't a lot of buyers (at the current price) if volume is down. In an up market I see the low volume as suggesting the upward momentum is about to end. Conversely, in a down trending market the light volume would suggest we're at (or near) a bottom.

    First Year Review

A few things: to breakeven while trading just part time isn't all bad. I think if you really want to do this successfully you need to be 100% committed, and focus totally on it. To have a separate business can be a distraction (although a good one if it's producing your income). I think one...

why we can not use a free e-mail account?

I've been using my Hotmail account for almost 6 years when I got rid of a local ISP and wanted to be able to check email from anywhere in the US. If one is travelling it doesn't make sense to have to dial a long distance number to access email. But I also can understand the abuse of email...

    Trading times for Friday

Seems like everyone who doesn't give Walter an "atta-boy" he flames (or puts on Ignore). A good trader is out there trading and doesn't spend his/her time ranting at those who don't worship a call. Besides, the "call" wasn't anything really too significant, especially given the original post...

How many stocks do you follow?

SPY, QQQ ... that covers a lot of ground ... and you know with 100% certainty they'll both move up/down during the day. And you don't have to do any homework at night!

    o no

No one wants to admit failure. What on earth would their friends think?

    o no

Can't have a defeatist attitude or you'll never succeed. If the things you're tried to date don't work for you then keep searching. Sit down and do some thinking on your own. What do you look for in a setup? Pullbacks? Bottom fishing? Breakouts? There's a lot of ways to trade and all it takes...

    Pushing It Further

I often gave back profits 6-7 years ago when I started trading full time. I can recall being up $1000 by 10:30 and thinking that I need to "work" (i.e. trade) the whole day. After all, I had always worked long hours in the corporate world so I think it was a sense of guilt if I quit early in...

    too many bulls now

Not only resistance .. but I expect a pullback of at least 5-6% as we move into the summer.

    80% of the traders...

I don't think the specialist is my opponent (since I've not traded NYSE stocks for ages :) ) ... rather, it's just other traders who I'm trading against ... as well as the market makers

    success...

For me being a success is doing well enough that I can continue to trade full time as my means of making a living ... and it's been a little over 7 years since I went full time ... but it also means adapting ones trading to what the market is saying (as we've seen both bull and bear markets in...

    Poker and the Beginning Trader

Before I started trading I used to develop systems and spent a few years doing AI (Artificial Intelligence) based Expert Systems so I agree that you can develop a system to emulate a human's thinking (i.e. rules, heuristics).

What is the worst thing you do when you get mad at a bad trade?

Why do you say that? I think one just needs to be able to read what's going on with whatever they're trading. You may not always be right but I think you can get the probabilities in your favor.

When is this market going to come down?

Think NASDAQ will pullback a bit more than Dow ... so I like shorting the QQQ.

When is this market going to come down?

Sure, it's bullish. At the same time I think it's overbought will pullback. When the Dow ran up over 100 today I decided it was time to go short. So far, so good!
