I find freestockcharts.com very good. I'm using the pay version which is very cheap and gives me live real time feeds during market hours. The software is stable and fast even for web browsing. No Heat

My guess is that it all depends on the trading style. I'm sure there are some trading strategies that absolutely kill it on low volatility, just like there are others that do the same with a high vix. No Heat
