1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

Elections matter and we are only one election away from FTT in any given EU country. If Labor or the left gains power in an EU election and in forming a new coalition government, they can demand FTT to join that coalition government. Consider Finland, they just had an election and the National...

European Union Exit? Concerns Grow for Britain - NYTimes.com http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/28/world/europe/european-union-exit-concerns-grow-for-britain.html My thinking: Cameron's threatening an EU exit referendum is probably related to the EU's FTT attack on the UK. If the UK has 70% or...

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

Agree, this article's author seems behind the curve on the FTT saga, she never even mentioned the upcoming QMV vote on EC-10 FTT. If she was up to speed, she would demand a no QMV vote by the UK. I don't see how the EC-10 FTT won't be extra-territorial, and therefore punitive to the UK as...

Year-End Tax Planning with the Fiscal Cliff

Do you think the Bush-era tax cuts will expire at year end 2012 on everyone, or just the rich, or be extended into 2013? New blog from Robert A. Green, CPA Tax planning is very tricky this year with the fiscal cliff. Most people hope Congress and President Obama will act soon — after the...

The UK likes to tax foreigners who use their markets and airports, too. Those landing taxes in London are way too high. I agree with southall above. When I first wrote about UK stamp duty years ago in connection with fighting FTT, I discussed the UK tax resident versus non-resident issue...

Need to be registered Investment Adviser for LLC?

If its 80/20 profit/loss sharing based on 80/20 capital contributions - with no sweat equity for you versus your partner - and there is no profit allocation, then you are not being compensated for investment management and there is no registration required for CA, SEC or NFA.

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

If the EC-10 FTT has extra-territorial reach in the UK and around the EU, I highly-doubt they will get a QMV of yes from the UK, and probably won't from the other big countries either. Who wants a tax charged in their country forked over to a competing country? Maybe, they are so desperate to...

Need to be registered Investment Adviser for LLC?

You don't have to be an RIA under this scenario. Registration is a concern when you get paid for investment advice or managing money. The key to your scenario is that your partner is active in the business and not a passive investor. Are you getting paid a profit allocation for your...

Italy's transactions tax seen hitting trading | Reuters http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/10/22/italy-transactions-tax-idUSL5E8LMDZK20121022 Italy is rushing to pass their own FTT by Jan 1, 2013, probably to keep the tax revenue in Italy, rather than pay it to Brussels. They factored...

I've written several anti-FTT blogs on Forbes and there are very few readers - around 1000. Forbes is not pro FTT although a few of their writers may support it. They have hundres of bloggers with no coordinated message. Serious tax talk in the US won't start until after the election.

I am not surprised that Germany and France - drivers of the fiscal compact, banking union and the powers controlling the PIIGS bailouts - could lean on Italy, Spain any many of the other EC-11 to sign on to their FTT move-forward discussions. We all doubted that Italy and Spain could really hold...

Thanks Tom, good thinking. I think it's your latter case, EC9 FTT with extra-territorial reach and the planned close fight over QMV. The French and German FMs probably will count the Yes votes at next week's econfin meeting of EU FM in Brussels. They will tweak the plan to get the QMV and...

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

Thanks, good analysis Explorer and I agree. If EC9 FTT doesn't hurt them, Italy and Spain will probably not vote against EC9-FTT in a QMV vote. They wouldn't want to enrage Germany. But, weren't all the recent proposals for EU FTT extra-territorial in reach? I doubt Germany will pass an EC9...

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

Thanks Explorer. EC 9 is just over half EC 17 and way short of a majority of the EU 27, on a member basis, not QMV basis. Plus, the EC 9 for FTT looks to be 2 big countries Germany and France plus lots of smaller countries, so it's probably even weaker on a QMV basis for passing an EC9 vote...
