I can't say for sure, but I think that was the peak of hft which really dulled down moves. It seemed like nothing would ever follow through...the only moves were gaps. Intraday moves are coming back for now. Or, maybe I just sucked as a trader that year.

In 2010 I could have made more working at McDonalds. Otherwise, every year has paid the bills plus some.

I'm serious, this thread seems to point out a misunderstanding of newer traders thinking you need to create a system, then backtest to be successful which isn't true at all. In fact I don't think any of the profitable traders I know rely on backtesting whatsoever. Are the books teaching...

The conditions for this style of trading have been slowly improving since last year. The past couple months have been even better than average.

A good trader can make money in nearly any volatile instrument. Stocks are just the easiest. Backtest to your hearts content...it won't make you a good trader.

Re: backtesting There are many profitable discretionary traders like myself that just trade volatility. Find whatever is moving, and trade it. There's nothing to backtest. I don't care if the stock is trading at 10c or $1000, or if it's down 50% or up 50%...I'll try to trade it, and more...

Dark pools aren't inherently a bad thing, I use them all the time. Problems only arise when the dark pool is abused. The real problem imo is internalization. A huge percent of retail orders never make it to market. This disrupts the nature of the market by removing incentive to provide...

Think in terms of a whole day. If you make $500 after trading 100k shares, you made a half cent per share (500/100000). This is an important stat if you know your costs, which for most is around the half cent mark.
