HFT, and is backtesting helpful or harmful?

    2) Is backtesting helpful for a new (unprofitable) daytrader? I think a lot of new guys put the cart in front of the horse. The idea of coming up with a magical system that the computer can test and trade for you makes new guys see dollar signs. My world isn't that big, but I don't know...

HFT, and is backtesting helpful or harmful?

    1) Does HFT really affect daytraders PnL? For me, yes it does every day. I use every trick in the book to find liquidity in the names I trade. This can include midpoints, darks, hidden, pegs, or discretionary orders. Even with all of this my orders get gamed day in, day out. Maybe it costs...

HFT, and is backtesting helpful or harmful?

Off topic discussion from http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?t=283227 continued... There are two lively debates happening here. 1) Does HFT really affect daytraders PnL? 2) Is backtesting helpful for a new (unprofitable) daytrader? There's a lot to discuss on both points, which...

New book on how traders are beating the HFT guys

I can't say for sure, but I think that was the peak of hft which really dulled down moves. It seemed like nothing would ever follow through...the only moves were gaps. Intraday moves are coming back for now. Or, maybe I just sucked as a trader that year.

New book on how traders are beating the HFT guys

In 2010 I could have made more working at McDonalds. Otherwise, every year has paid the bills plus some.

New book on how traders are beating the HFT guys

I'm serious, this thread seems to point out a misunderstanding of newer traders thinking you need to create a system, then backtest to be successful which isn't true at all. In fact I don't think any of the profitable traders I know rely on backtesting whatsoever. Are the books teaching...

New book on how traders are beating the HFT guys

The conditions for this style of trading have been slowly improving since last year. The past couple months have been even better than average.

New book on how traders are beating the HFT guys

A good trader can make money in nearly any volatile instrument. Stocks are just the easiest. Backtest to your hearts content...it won't make you a good trader.

New book on how traders are beating the HFT guys

Re: backtesting There are many profitable discretionary traders like myself that just trade volatility. Find whatever is moving, and trade it. There's nothing to backtest. I don't care if the stock is trading at 10c or $1000, or if it's down 50% or up 50%...I'll try to trade it, and more...

Reaction to Michael Lewis's book and "60 Minutes" interview

Dark pools aren't inherently a bad thing, I use them all the time. Problems only arise when the dark pool is abused. The real problem imo is internalization. A huge percent of retail orders never make it to market. This disrupts the nature of the market by removing incentive to provide...

EricP, Lescor, Patrickq, Dustin and gang..

Think in terms of a whole day. If you make $500 after trading 100k shares, you made a half cent per share (500/100000). This is an important stat if you know your costs, which for most is around the half cent mark.

    NinjaTrader hide title bar?

Most charting packages allow you to hide the title bar, especially for charts. I'm a new user of Ninja and see no way to do this. A google search came up with something over at BigMike's forum, but I would have to pay $100 for access to the thread. Has anyone created a script that they can...

    Cramer is back at it

Were you trading at the time? Multiple hedge funds died glorious deaths trying to short the top. Many saw the top, it was the retail that just kept buying on the way down while not understanding how bad things can get. This time won't be any different. The Fed bubble will pop, and the ride...
