    Mechanical vs Neural trading systems

The biggest problem with Neural Networks in general is that they have very large degrees of freedom. In other words, you can train it to produce just about anything on historical data, without it having *any* predictive value. I have found that NN and general evolutionary algorithms are very...

    Starting a small Hedge Fund??

In addition to all the other advice, you could also consider an IB Friends & Family setup. That's super clean and simple. Allan

IB 'Looking for shares' to short

Depending on what you trade, you can get the "locate" binoculars from time to time. It's ultimate a matter of a limited short list at IB; bigger brokers will have more inventory. I get locates from time to time, but now (via the API) cancel the locate orders. I don't want to deal with it.

    What is a profitable strategy?

I'd say you're off to a reasonable start. Here are the parameters I'd be looking for: 1. %win > 45%. This is key, because if the number of winning trades is much lower you run the risk of relying on very few trades to make it profitable (think vacation, hospital, etc. You *always* miss the...

Few rookie IB + API questions

If you need to route to specific exchanges, IB is just not competitive. As far as I can tell, Genesis is the best choice. I use IB/SMART for ~2000 orders/day - all API generated. In my experience SMART is fairly good, and probably as good/fast as anything i could do "at home", if i take...

    Trading to meet daily targets

I think it's a better idea to have some general idea of the max loss you'll take. No reason to cut the winners. If you hit the max loss, it's likely that either you, your system, network or broker is misbehaving. Those sorts of sanity checks are very valuable, imo.

    The Old Fart Thread

EricP reminded me (ever so politely) that I qualify for "old fart" status. 45Y. Started trading the SP500 (pit traded) 1996. Also traded currency and bonds futures. Some stock trading in the late 90s, and have been focusing more and more on stocks since 2005 or so.

    The Timmay Sykes Journal

If TS feels like proving anything, all he needs to do is post specific entries and exits in realtime (incl date, time & price) and only comment on those trades. No "retro-trades" like the ones currently being discussed.

HELP - my laptop needs more volume

I agree. I have a T60 and the maximum volume is WAY to low. My other Dells and HPs are much better. When i need for others to listen to the audio, I've been using amplified speakers (sad, but true). The T6? does not have acceptable speakers, imo

Every morning at 9:24am EST, IB forcibly logs me out

In addition to the two posts following your question. In my case, the DHCP lease that was being renewed was my routers, not the individual PCs. You'll have to log into your router and find "WAN" or "Global IP" or something like that. There is usually a button to "renew" lease. In my...

Every morning at 9:24am EST, IB forcibly logs me out

I had the same problem. It turned out to be that my DHCP lease got renewed at that time. Usually the leases are for 24 hours, so that might be your problem.

    The problem with IB

I don't do the volume that MrNBBO does, but my experience mirrors his. I generally route my orders SMART. By far the biggest issue/risk is the excessive time it takes for orders to go "green" at times. I've experienced as long as 20 seconds for some orders (generally the order is "light...

    Hidden Divergence Trades

This is not one of the divergences I'd entertain (even though it worked out in retrospect). If prices made new high, but stoch didn't, I'd consider shorting. This assumes that the lookback of the stochastics made sense relative to the seperation of the peaks.
