$60 Trillion of World Debt in One Visualization

Agreed but regardless the U.S., Japan and EU are all far outpacing the EM's. I'm not sure that it would look that much different if it were relative to GDP

MCD is in big trouble. May not exist in 5 years

All this shows it the poor quality of financial writing available. Arby's has per location sales of around $1m/unit and suffered -10% sales declines just a couple of years ago. Of course they are currently seeing bigger sales increases than McDonanld's as they are crossing much worse numbers...

Hillary proposing higher short term capital gains taxes

It's her token offering for tax increases. In the scheme of things, it could be a lot worse. But I agree that it's adding to complexity rather than smoothing our tax code out.

    best way to short gold

I don't see gold bottoming unless the dollar tops. Time will tell, but I think the dollar is ready to break higher again. Particularly if there is a rate hike, I see the dollar continuing its bullishness. If that's the case, I would think there's more pain ahead for gold.

Hillary proposing higher short term capital gains taxes

I think the point is more that eventually democratic voters figure out they can vote for the candidate that gives them the most free stuff, and that has negative consequences. I don't necessarily think it automatically gives rise to dictatorships/monarchies but certainly can lead to the...

Best platform for Mutual Fund trading

Scottrade is great for trading mutual funds but no futures available. You'll probably need two accounts unless your trading style can handle high commissions

    Have Markets Really Changed ?

I think the markets continually changes and goes through periods with varying levels of volatility, trendiness/choppiness. Certainly a lot has changed since Livermore traded, namely the SEC. I think there are several studies that currencies no longer trend like they did pre-2000, when many of...

Fair enough. I agree that there should be far less complexity in the tax code.

Hillary proposing higher short term capital gains taxes

Taking money and then redistributing it is by definition social engineering. The government is determining from whom they take it from, how much they take, and then who (and how much) they want to redistribute it to. This isn't rocket science. You can call it revenue, but the entire process...

Hillary proposing higher short term capital gains taxes

Ok, well at least we clarified when you want to pick and choose to socially engineer. You're entitled to that view point, but at least we've cleared up that you misspoke previously.

Hillary proposing higher short term capital gains taxes

Oh really? What does the government do with that "revenue" that they take? They distribute it, mostly in an attempt to engineer society. Think before you post.

Hillary proposing higher short term capital gains taxes

If you want more investment, you shouldn't tax it more. The old quote that has been attributed to many people over the last couple of centuries..... "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of...

35 year horizon - what would you hold?

If you truly don't want to provide any management then I would look at VBINX or something similar. That's Vanguard's 60/40 stock/bond balanced mutual fund. Or you could look at a small portfolio of mutual funds (google lazy portfolios to do some research), but you'll at least have to go in...
