National debt at $545,668 per household

$545,668 is amazing when you consider the fact that federal debt doesn't include pension liabilities (look up CALPERS and how much they are underfunded) and other miscellaneous liabilities and the total debt per household may be closer to $1 million.

    shorting EUR/USD

Shorting GBP/JPY also looks good here for a short term play.

    EUR/JPY 5/27/09

My mistake was #1. I didn't move the stop and probably set it too close in the first place considering the action that day was choppy. #2 is self explanatory because the trade did not work out. #3 is a good point but I tend not to hold my positions for a long time so unless the interest...

Is facebook really worth 10 billion?

Founders tend to overestimate the value of their companies (look at Jerry Yang and Microsoft's offer for Yahoo last year), and they usually end up missing the window of opportunity if their companies are not successful already.

Is facebook really worth 10 billion?

"Social networking" today is not that different from all the dot com startups of the late 1990s. While some went on to prosper, most ended up bankrupt and people today wouldn't recognize most of the names. The founder of Facebook, if he is smart, should take the $3-4 billion that is being...

    evening trading pairs...

USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, and AUD/USD are all active during the Asian session. EUR/JPY and AUD/USD are more volatile but their spreads are also predictably larger.

    EUR/JPY, USD/JPY, EUR/USD Correlations

USD/JPY has broken out of a triangle to the downside, while EUR/JPY has not declined as much due to EUR strength. USD/JPY and EUR/JPY are normally correlated with each other, but their divergence seems to be suggesting that EUR/JPY is now following EUR/USD instead. Does anyone else see it this way?

Why Do Hedge Funds Have So Much Dry Powder, and What Are They Doing to Keep It Safe?

Couldn't they invest into short term T Bills in the first place since holding them to maturity means they are essentially like cash? I don't think it makes sense to be charged a fee if the fund is simply hoarding cash.

Interesting, Obama is primarily parked in treasuries.

Noob, it says more about his personality than it does about his views on the economy. Obama, Bernanke, etc... all have most of their money in mutual funds and treasuries, meaning that they're risk averse. Now the question is, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

    Market Participants of FX??

The largest participants have to be banks (central, commercial, etc...) in the form of swaps. Contrary to popular belief, most forex transactions are done for hedging purposes.

    The Welfare State

Social Security insurance is hardly a case of public interest. There is no auto insurance policy in the world that tells you "too bad, you don't qualify under our means testing program even though you have paid premiums over the years."

    The Welfare State

You're comparing apples to oranges here. Auto insurance is required because there is a legitimate public interest. As you said, home insurance is only required if you have a loan. In that case, it becomes a matter of fulfilling a debt covenant rather than being a matter of choice.

    The Welfare State

You have a choice when buying insurance. Nobody is forcing you to buy life insurance. You don't have a choice with Social Security unless you derive all of your income from sources with no FICA taxes.
