That's called a taxpayer bailout.

It appears they are being a bit smarter than that - buying up long-term access to resources ex-USA instead. It's a tricky business - "nationalizing" is always a threat - but it's certainly better than blowing it all on hookers and blow in Vegas or buying the Rockefeller Center for a zillion dollars.

It doesn't really matter much. The roads and buildings will still be there. People will still grow food, have kids, go to school, etc. New money will be issued, they'll take on new debt, obladi oblada...

Countries go broke all the time. The world hiccups, life goes on. Money is just money.

Then prepare for a lifetime of disappointment.

Indeed. Everybody living a normal life expectancy will experience at least one, if not two, major bull markets. Wait for the "end of the world", then load up long on margin, averaging up with every spare penny you have. This really is a simple, simple game...for people with patience...

Large tech companies are the same. Big organizations - public, private or mixed - are all generally equally inefficient and non-meritocratic. It's in our nature to organize in that manner...

NYSE, as an institution, does not understand the modern world. IMO they are dead man walking.

The US reached the height of its economic prowess - a height never achieved by any other nation, anywhere, with a middle class of unimaginable size - under the watchful eye of the Fed. That is a definition of "broke" that most countries would kill for.

Just read Adam Smith - he nailed most of them, a long time ago, in "Wealth of Nations".
