    The death of Microsoft

Dont know yet: this was expected however and is one of the reasons we dumped $soft a couple of years ago - we were correct in our assessment it seems. I really think there will be some new business opportunities opening up based upon this policy: thanks $soft.

    The death of Microsoft

"Businesses that want the Enterprise Edition of Microsoft's forthcoming Windows Vista operating system will have to sign up for its Software Assurance licensing program, the company announced today. Software Assurance, introduced in 2001, encourages customers to pay an annual fee to use...

When we compute the true hold cost of running a particular software platform we include this cost. $soft never talks about this cost. It is substantial and when correctly measured and included in the true hold cost of $soft systems the cost dwarfs that of open source stacks.

Great system time tested but I need CODING help!!

This really is not the place to find talent for software projects .... And yes, those agreements are only as good as the amount of money you have to stop violators - much like patents. Unless you have tens of millions (actually maybe a hundred million) in cash to sue everybody in the case of a...

    Warning: Mozilla & Bookmarks

Interesting. We run Mozilla and newer Firfox versions all on Linux. We have never yet had an issue with losing the users bookmarks. The platform on Linux is in our experience extremely stable and very secure.

The betas are are much about marketing as they are about "testing" ... I look at Operating Systems, Desktop environments and servers as dialtone: they are simple commodities required to run a business. However "dialtone" needs to be ultra reliable and trusted. Open Source is cheap - no fee -...

    Chicago Board of Trade

Agreed. Long ago when derivatives were still looking for price discovery equations the chicago exchanges were a very unique place. Now with most things done over the wire they really are not - at least to the degree that they were years ago. Things I dont miss: chalk dust, leaving the floor...

Isn't cPickle great ? - I like pyTables for certain things as well. It really is amazing how well this all works with no payment to anyone required. It seems to me that $soft just keeps making it more difficult to develop for their platforms - roadblocks, continung fee increases etc - and the...

    Shorted RFX... Hmm.. Now what?

it appears straightforward: I was thinking about the setllement ... if the broker had the shares to short originally then it should already be accounted for ...... guess I will have to revisit this scenario .....

    Shorted RFX... Hmm.. Now what?

..but did you automatically get the credit ? That is, how is the trade ultimately settled ?

    Shorted RFX... Hmm.. Now what?

Actually I have never held shares in anything that was halted and filing for reorg ..... still dont. That said, it seems that if you are short and you never get the opportunity to get filled on a buyback then you have made nothing..... but you borrowed the shares ..... who is holding the bag...

Steps toward a Chicago Prop Trader

\ Well, Maz Chadid, and Gil - president of CME, started off as market reporters working on the trading floor. Most of the people that went on to trade though did not. Many people simply were "placed" temporarily as reporters while waiting for their seat applications to be approved. I expect...

    Refco Account Security

Like I said earlier, if you think you were libeled on ET then I think you have larger problems. Morover, if your firms (if your handle actually correspsonds to a real firm ) officers allow you to post here then there is an even greater problem. There is a reason people laugh at most of the...

Which is better, an MBA or PhD?

....and if you have a phd in math or science this type of information can easily be a self-study project. Get the phd: the business-lite stuff (marketing, team dynamamics, financial accounting etc) can be picked up in your spare time and, if you have had any type of team product development or...

Refco subsidiary (RTS?) freezes customer accounts

Sure. Did you expect this fiasco with Refco ? If so then why ? I dont expect companies that get through the IPO stage to uncover this type of revelation well after the pre-IPO due diligence was completed and signed off by multiple parties. Moreover, although I knew in gut after the second...

Refco subsidiary (RTS?) freezes customer accounts

I think many of know how the system works and how the regulatory statements read. .... Still, I think the situation is unfolding in a largely unanticipated extraordinary manner. Again, I would refer anyone that would like to read it to todays front page WSJ article.
