    Pete's Place

Practice is a large part of my daily routine. Sometimes even while I have real trades going, i'm paper trading too. Every endeavor has a different relationship between practice and the "real thing". In most things, you start with other newbies and work your way up. There are two extremes...

    Pete's Place

First a general observation. In every endeavor i've seen the same thing: people want to buy something to make them better at it. And it's the same story every time: either you practice hard and make a commitment in your life, or you will suck at that endeavor. It doesn't matter what you buy...

    Pete's Place

I trade pullbacks. I developed my method starting with a very nice little thing that Nqoos put on his website. Here's a link to it: The Floor Trader System Don't mind the long intro (a story about a good trader blowing up). The story makes a good point though: Your past performance...

Two reasons for running this journal: (1) To learn. There is a lot of trading talent running though these boards. For months I have been watching folks get all kinds of great advice. Curiously, it seems like most of those getting the good advice would rather fly against it. Not me. I...

Finally I'm starting my trading journal. I have a lot to say before we start. I will be posting installments this week and will start trades in the journal next week.

Next step in a newbie's quest for glory

While paper trading is not the same as real trading (the emotions are different), you need to turn a profit on paper before you can do it with real money.. have you done this? A monthly paper profit?

POLL...Best API for for IB order entry...

There are two issues: stop or stop-limit; then native and non-native. The plain stop order is a market order that gets sent when price triggers it. It cannot get "blasted through". You can (rarely) get a lousy price, but at least you get something. To miss your stop entirely you'll have to...

    (sigh)

Remember that's how the rally started off the October 2002 lows-- 2 or 3 gaps up that went unfilled. It'll be interesting to see what happens...

    TWS crashing/quitting

THANK YOU for pointing out this AWESOME program. This thing checks to make sure TWS is running; if not, it runs TWS, logs you in, and enables your connections (in my case from Sierra Chart). Now I don't have to worry about losing data!

TA guys, Look at this chart.

Looks like a close above $8 would be my stop if I went short. I would wait for a pullback to $7.75-$7.50 before going short.

POLL...Best API for for IB order entry...

Since trading NQ/ES I have had one experience with the Globex crashing with an open position, and no experiences with TWS not excecuting a stop order. Not to say that it couldn't happen, anything can. But the only real defense is to trade small. Having an additional account with a phone order...

1- limit orders are also native 2- stop-limit orders are not essential, or even necessary, or even desireable for longer term trading, ES/NQ or anything else

For those who want something simpler than TWS, not more complicated, check out TSim+. It's free -- donate if you like Big buttons that say "BUY" and "SELL"! You position is clearly displayed on screen-- not hidden with thousands of gadgets... eliminate costly mistakes... Keeps track...

    Slowness Really Hurts Us

There's no way your CPU is maxed out from "several highly liquid stocks". Besides an anti-virus you'll also want to run Ad-Aware or SpyBot. I had the problem trendy talked about, now fixed thanks to Spybot.

    Cheap Charting Software

If you can program, you'll do better $$ wise if you spend a few bucks acquiring data in a file, then writing a program to do the backtest that uses this data. If you don't know how but want to learn, pick up something simple like Visual Basic or even Excel.

    TWS crashing/quitting

Almost once I day TWS quits on me... silently. All of the sudden it's just gone. (The is not the auto logout feature, which I have set for 4:30pm.) Sometimes is happens while I'm away from my desk, extremely annoying since I lose data for SierraCharts. I'm running Win 2000. Anybody...

    Hidden Stops on Globex??

The market depth shows the number of bids and asks 5 levels deep. You can't tell if each one represents a stop-limit or limit order.

    Buying/Selling the Open on NASDAQ/NYSE/AMEX

Get your market order in as soon as possible? I have an IRA with TD Waterhouse for long term stuff (I trade short term with IB). If I put a market order in before the open, it gets submitted right at the open, and since it's a small order I've almost always gotten the opening price or very...
