USA stocks 0% profit for past 10 years

So much talk about the dividends, charts, etc. Look at the numbers. I posted the Total returns, which include dividends as well as a link to the source. The SP500 LOST money over the past 10 years, and that is WITH dividends, and NOT accounting for taxes on those dividends.

I suggest that you keep a detailed journal of your trades. You'll learn from your experience quicker if you are keeping close track of what matters. For a time I wasn't sure if it was better to wait until my regular exit signal, or take a profit target. So for a time I did both. I then did...

USA stocks 0% profit for past 10 years

This thread is about the returns of the US stock market over the past 10 years and I have yet to see posted the actual TOTAL returns. The SP500 is a generally accepted measure of the US stock market, per Morningstar, as of the 10 years ended 6-2-10, the TOTAL returns are an average annual...

-360. With a couple of my strategies in cash and few trades meeting my criteria for my long/short, I tried an ETF day trade, and a day trade in a strategy pick that was too high risk for my normal trade. Both losers. I suck as a day trader and that's why I rarely take such trades. The...

    Top Performing ETFs

Investics, Thanks for sharing. Lot of good information. I've tried some casual and some quantitative attempts at market timing, but right now I just use a very simple solution using moving averages. Currently as I measure it the short, medium, and long term trends are down, so I am very...

No need to get mad, all you had to do was ask. Most of my gains were from one account this week - see attached. I trade 3 accounts, two of which don't provide data that is suitable for posting here. The results shown are by position and I am not a day trader, so those screen shots will not...

One trader's story, with returns history

One other point I noticed was that MarketScientist quoted specific annual returns. This is something people rarely do and I think one reason is because many people may not know their annual returns, after accounting for deposits, withdrawals, etc.. I was curious how my results compared and I...

One trader's story, with returns history

I agree with the comments about illiquidity. For me, my edges are clearly larger with the smaller stocks. I go to a monthly traders meeting and there was some discussion about how important it was to trade liquid markets. I said I preferred to trade at the "limits of liquidity". Stocks so...

    The Best Methods of Hedging

I suggest you look into that yourself first. Apparently VXX underperforms $VIX pretty significantly: http://www.businessinsider.com/the-vix-etf-vxx-is-another-classic-etf-disaster-2009-10 A static allocation to VXX since it's inception would have done very poorly as a hedge. VXN has done...

    The Best Methods of Hedging

Rather than hedge, I trade low correlated strategies, including several long and one short. The short strategy is not strictly a hedge but when combined with the long portfolio's it generally reduces portfolio volatility and drawdown.

    Can you beat buy&hold?

Good question. So few discuss actual returns I don't really know how most other traders do. I know returns in the 100's of % are possible and that losses, or at least underperforming the market are more common. This year I updated my spreadsheet so I could better track my results, trade by...

    Trader P/L 2010

It's no fun to post losses :( , and I was tired of posting daily. I started an account last Oct and was planning to comment when I doubled it, was up 97.5% a couple weeks ago, but now into a drawdown of about 12%. For last week, -$1065, -1.1%. Scaled back my long trading due to market...

    Fools Gold?

This is a good question. If you were to ask it on this forum: http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/ I guarantee they would tell you that you would be better off with passive investing and getting on with your life. For most people this is good advice, and given that you are even asking the...

    What's wrong with short selling??

Well first it's not against the law to create money out of thin air, banks do it all the time when they loan out something like 10 times their asset base. But that's not what's happening with short selling. In your example, starting with 100 shares total. If I sell short 15 shares, there are...

    Risk models and strategy...

I like this one! I am not current on the more complicated methods, but I think the uncertainties in my strategies are almost certainly too high for such methods to provide much value anyways.

    Daytrader lifestyle =boring

I am making some nice extra income from trading but still working a full time job. I could use some more boredom in my life. Looking forward to the day when I have enough $ that I don't need a job.
