Ray Dalio was Blindsided by the Coronavirus Market Rout, and Now His Flagship Fund is Down 20% this

Well I’d assume once you realize the markets reaction, it’s not that easy to get 160 billion out of the market. Even a hedge would have to take awhile to put on. Just assuming. Never tried to hedge a 160 billion dollar portfolio.

Why is the volume so modest , considering the epic carnage ?

I think options market makers must be making a killing. Reddit filled with people asking how to open options account. Then theirs also lots of post about how come price went down but my put lost money. Market makers could sell them almost anything.

    I'm getting whipsawed, and I need advice/opinion

Volatility isn’t always a great thing for a longer term trade unless you size right. Flats also a position. My strategies are all swing trading/mean reversion over multiple days. I’m hanging out in cash. Work for a living, can’t watch account all day. Other thing is panic is a different game...

    ETF forced selling...

Was watching a recent Joe Rogan podcast with MIchael Osterholm. Topic was about Coronavirus. Half way in podcast he’s discussing being straightforward with public about it and his briefing last Friday with about 400 major financial investors about the virus. He compared them to 6 year olds...

That's a first... IB notified me that one of my trades is being busted.

Sounds like they were executing after a trading halt was announced and are just cancelling them.

Something serious to consider . Will stock exchanges be shut down for a short period?

Probably some plans in place. Seen an article last night where they mentioned JP Morgan has kind of made an A and B team on 14 day rotations working from home and work. Idea I guess is control a workplace out break. Smart if it can work.

29 minutes ago: Coronavirus finally levels off in locations outside China

I dunno, when I’m reading articles about how Corona beer sales are way down, whether it’s subliminal or lack of education, I have to side with dozu.

Which volatility measure for setting stops ?

Sure. Use it on whatever your timeframe is. 20 bar ema/ma 2 ATR, perhaps try 1 ATR. It will adjust quickly for volatility vs a hardstop.

Which volatility measure for setting stops ?

I’ve always used keltner channels on a chart. Find it helps visualize moves. 20 day EMA with 2 atr bands. Helps account for volatility with position sizing and ATR.

    Buying a covered call, bid/ask

If someone submits a market order, it’ll most likely be routed to someone paying for that order or a dark pool before it goes to you. Market maker has his bid/ask at 2.00/3.00. You join that ask at 3.00. Some retail sends their market order(less likely in options), they route it to their...

Day 2 - The Outage Continues

Could just imagine being CEO or just working at RH. I’m guessing they all just called in sick today. Any old veterans remember anything like this from a brokerage. Only thing I’ve ever noticed is some bankruptcies. Can’t remember name but hear stories of what I think was a futures broker or...

    Are gaming laptops worth it?

8 gigs is a minimum. My two laptops both only have 8. Never had a hiccup. 16gb be my ideal setup. You start doing heavy backtesting it can benefit or if you run a lot of tasks. SSD is a must. Depending on your uses will vary. My little Asus laptop I use on couch has 256gb and I’m fine. I just...

    Are gaming laptops worth it?

Benefit of gaming laptop is graphics card. Pay big money for powerful graphics cards in a laptop. For trading or backtesting your big thing is cpu and ram. Built in graphics is plenty sufficient. Better to direct funds towards quality, battery, cpu, screen, keyboard etc instead of dedicated...

Using Stop Losses on S&P Futures

I’ve always just kept my stops where I know I’m wrong. As a daily swing trader this is usually 1-2 20 day ATR away. Usually leaves me room to get out before as well with a time stop. My entries are all based off pullbacks/consolidations. Might not work for yourself. Stop loss is my worst...

Is it dumb money leaving the market?

Looking at some charts and spreadsheets today, I've noticed that ETF's are leading the way in above average volume. Many are 2-5 times their average 50 day volume while most stocks are hardly hitting 2x their average. I would think with redemption that this would trickle down into individual...

    Realtime Scanner on tick basis?

    A 5 percent move is a 5 percent move. Don’t need a 377 tick chart for that.

Does NBBO should be same on different exchanges or they do differ per exchange?

Don’t know about options but that Amex one shouldn’t be labeled NBBO. NBBO is from all the exchanges. Just google NBBO. Should find the info to explain.

Any real reasons left to go with a desktop / tower over a laptop? (Faster / more powerful perhaps?)

I wouldn’t say laptops overheat and shut down, but they will throttle. So if your doing a lot of backtesting/optimization then over time the cpu will clock down. If it starts shutting down then theirs a problem. My Sager 8268 fans almost non stop. But it’s running a i7 at 3.4ghz up to 4.2...

Any real reasons left to go with a desktop / tower over a laptop? (Faster / more powerful perhaps?)

I do like myself a nice laptop, but if you don’t need heavy computing on the go, I’d say a solid desktop with a medium specced laptop be the best option. What drives me nuts about laptops is the upgrade cost. Take something like a surface laptop, want 16g instead of 8g of ram, add 300$. Want...

All bids and offers disappeared - has this ever happened?

August 2015 I think it was, mini flash crash. That was at the open though. Huge gap down. on equities there are circuit breakers kind of like futures limit up/down. But if the market still wants to go, their can be drastic moves with no liquidity.
