Zen and The Art of Trading

It may have a lot to do with mathematics. Setting profit targets can be an exercise in anxiety control (possibly bad) but it may also be based on measurements of moves made in your chosen tradeable and may result in very good risk/reward ratios. I don't know what you trade but I find that with...

Marty, You might be interested in a book called The Disciplined Online Investor by Hendlin which expands on your last point in a discussion of "Assertive and Yeilding modes of Control."

Rule 22 is interesting and to me raises a couple of issues: Is it really important to know (it) inside and out? My view is that one or two tested and internalized setups with good exit rules is sufficient and because trading is about probabilities you just accept that you can't cover...

Zen and The Art of Trading

I will probably have to buy this book. Thats an excellent point and one I struggle with because my trading day is from 5pm to 10pm so its late in my alertness timetable. Sometimes I watch TV (non-financial) with a timer on to remind me to check every 5 minutes before the bar closes...

where did u all learn how to trade?

Actually it says "Those who speak do not know." Which is clearly an ancient and enlightened way of saying "if they offer a verbal/written solution they are full of shit." I don't see any mention of homework in it. bs. And back on topic, I learnt by reading a lot of books, many useless...

Zen and The Art of Trading

Thanks et user. That lead to this article which seems to me to be a good way of addressing the fear and discomfort that the less advanced traders such as I feel from time to time. Something to try tomorrow: Buddha Lessons

I liked darkhorses perspective although I have yet to reach that stage. I like the humour in Brett Steenbarger's variation on this theme: "Many a trader fears boredom more than loss, thereby experiencing the two in sequence."

Good response privateisland. You might want to read the professors work as well as the Amazon review. You do make one mistake. I don't regard Woodie as a guru, just another trader who tries to teach some stuff to people and enjoys it. And I don't have the regard for him that I would have...

Anyone who has read Herrigels "Zen in the Art of Archery" would be well served to read the academic review of it (from Japan) ... http://www.nanzan-u.ac.jp/SHUBUNKEN/publications/jjrs/pdf/586.pdf One interesting review on Amazon said:

What chart type? Time, tick or volume

n : the lagging of an effect behind its cause; especially the phenomenon in which the magnetic induction of a ferromagnetic material lags behind the changing magnetic field In this case, when price has gone down thru 12390 to form a bar in the 12390-12380...

What chart type? Time, tick or volume

I found that in the range bars I built for sierra that I had to build optional hysteresis in as well. Otherwise with a 5pt range on hsi they were toggling back and forth with slight overruns on the multiples of 10 which negated the "show the trend but hide/compress the sideways movement"...

    Price Bars

FWIW I have added constant price bars (aka mb) to the dll for sierrachart that does constant volume and volumetick bars. http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=568507#post568507

What chart type? Time, tick or volume

Unfortuntately I trade HSI and Euro, neither of which really have the high volumes that make volume charts clearly better ... at least to me. The argument about ticks being better than volume has some merit ... except that when you are at a potential turning point on hsi you often get a...

What chart type? Time, tick or volume

It might interest you to know, guy, that I have created an option under sierra to start a new bar on the basis of either ticks or volume. Thus if the activity was high volume (but low tick) or vice versa it would result in a "market activity" bar. It will be interesting to see if people end...

    Chinook's EUR/USD (E/$)Mumblings

Krupk.. that seems to be a choice you make by the timeframe you trade. And how much you feel you need to make. I chose to just trade the european morning session and have found that 3 hours is long enough to make a reliable living from it. Occasionally I get the urge to do the US morning as...
