    First time writing covered calls

"There are very few options strategies that are of value. They only belong in the hands of very experienced traders, and they do NOT involve straight puts or calls, long or short." I remember watching an order trade for 500 calls on the OEX on the 3 rd day of a 10 day bull run. I'm sure that...

    Citi A Buy ?

I averaged down a little today also, right at the high. Well if nothing else with the dividend you are still getting over 4% return on the stock.

another reason IB is the pits

As a long term IB client, I wish they spent less time defending themselves on this board and more time answering the phone and treating their clients as valued customers and less like an inconvenience who are only there for them to make $ from.

Well there is a year's worth of trading down the tubes

Hey this is nothing compared to the first few years where I actually lost $. I was just making a comment that I've got the same amount of $ in my account now as I had a year ago. Mostly moaning that I could have benn banging the old lady at 6:30 in the morning instead of watching my screen for...

Well there is a year's worth of trading down the tubes

I thought I had a moderately good year since I was up 25% in my account for 2007. Now I am right back where I started . Probably not the only one either.

    First time writing covered calls

"There are very few options strategies that are of value. They only belong in the hands of very experienced traders, and they do NOT involve straight puts or calls, long or short." Long calls or puts are the best way to capitalize on major turns in the market or a stock While the odds are...

"We play for cash, not for proportion of successful trades." Interesting comment. I play for cash also because I'm small time and occasionally do pick up 1000% return. However, I believe the people who consistently make $ from options use the same strategy the casinos use which is to play for...

"The term "edge" is most commonly referred to as capitalizing on inefficiencies in the pricing of options. It's not really a comment on guessing direction and then selling options on the opposite side of that guess. " That answer I can understand. Thanks.

"The reason there's no edge in buying vs selling is that options are priced very efficiently these days, so you cannot beat the market by just selling options (or buying them, for that matter)." Of course I understand the efficiency of the pricing on the options. But the strategy of selling...

" Let's say your winning ratio is 50/50......... "Assume you win 50% of the time and assume your 5% of loses wipes out your 95% gains." I'm sorry but I don't consider this to be proof of anything. I was thinking of an answer with a little more factual information in it.

    Fed vs the market

"Who cares.. it is now what it is." Well what is it? We've just broke support in major indexes after a double top that has failed. For most technical traders that's a pretty strong sell sign, except there is the spectre of the Fed breaking with the norm and jumping in at anytime with an...

    Fed vs the market

Well here we are again, back at support levels for the 3rd time over the last year. It seems whenever we break support and the market screams sell, the fed steps in and up we go. Makes it difficult to trade any trends. Wonder where we would be without the rate cutting.

"There's no edge in selling options vs buying them." I see this quote often, and fail to understand it. I would really like to see the justification for it. Scenario 1. I know that if I sell a call 2 strikes out and the stock stays flat I make $, if it goes up a little, I make $ if it...

"Not to mention there is no edge in that trade at all since you'll find the SPX vs. SPY or OEX priced to perfection. " I Think you misunderstood the setup. You don't sell SPY puts and buy OEX puts. You pick a basket of stocks on the S&P ie. AAPL, INTC, COP, C etc... , you add up the % of...

LEH naked jan call, need advise on exiting

"IOW there are other strategies that work better on a consistent basis" Feel free to share them with me. Although I do trade spreads and have most of my $ tied up in spreads right now, The return isn't even worth thinking about. I'm basically a naked options trader at heart. I think for small...

IB shutdown - How did they solve your loss

Some years ago I had IB go down when I was long 50 contracts on the QQQ's as the Naz started a dramatic 3 day slide. Couldn't get out of the trade quickly, or short against it. My complaint was met with a " Even the Nasdaq goes down sometimes" comment. Good luck getting $ back from these guys.

POLL: What is worst trading mistake you ever made?

This post has been done before, look at the archives. But ... biggest move I ever missed - I was trading options fulltime on the Q's and TASR but thought MSO might be a good longer term play when it was at $8. Since I didn't normally trade it I bought 1 measly 10 sp LEAP on it for $50 and sold...

I don't know if it is zero risk, but I was looking at a system that employed selling naked puts on S&P stocks, looking at what % of the S&P those stocks make up, then buying puts on either the SPY or OEX ( I don't remember which) at a ratio that protected you from big downturns on the stocks and...
