    Journal of a Novice-Level Speculator

FWIW, I passed the 3 in 1981 and never renewed it. Never needed to. I don't have any customers, and just trade my own account and have never needed an audit to get customers. Still, I get offers all the time from people in the industry, shoving huge bucks in my face, because if you're good...

Recent Graduate....want to work as a trader

Seriously, some of the best traders I've ever run into came from farm backgrounds, had Ag majors from Iowa and Kansas, and beat the Ivy guys into the ground. Ex-Bookies, backgammon and chess players also have a better chance of making it profitable. Poker players.......everyone claims to be a...

By law you need a Series 7 for sales of securities.....you're not absolutely required by law to have a CFA to manage money. If you were good enough, you could manage a $20 Billion hedge fund without a CFA without problems except registration under the new rules. Jeff

Recent Graduate....want to work as a trader

I'm a newbie trader that started in 1973 as a kid in high school, bought a seat in 1978 and traded wheat as a local. Been doing it ever since but migrated to the screen.

    Journal of a Novice-Level Speculator

I've been trading for 30+ years and think I might reach the expert level in another 30 years. Seriously, it was a bunch of 80 year old guys who started trading in the 1920's who taught me to trade. I'm glad you realize your limitations, which is an excellent first step. Your idea of playing a...

    Journal of a Novice-Level Speculator

Good luck on the CFA thing, but one question comes to mind......would you expect someone to trust you with their money? At a beginner level? Not trying to be snarky, but realistic. Seriously, I wish you luck, but just don't blow out your account, or worse.......someone else's.

Try one of the big grain companies like C@rgill. They're always looking for talent, but you'll have to start at the bottom. Your MS isn't shit as far as they're concerned. however, the grain companies will teach you how to trade........I know, grains aren't sexy, but what the hell...

best books you've read on trading

I've assembled a pretty decent collection of old market related books on my blog. These are free downloads and include some rare titles. All are helpful, especially Clews and Mackay's books. With the risk of getting banned from this site, here is the link...

is grocery store a good trading business?

Low margins, high labor costs, shrinkage, theft, regulations, employee theft, maintenance, utility bills($10,000+ a month) and cost of carry of inventory make it a very tough business. Plus, if your employees get pissed, they'll unionize and your labor costs will go through the roof. Better off...

    The 10,000 hour rule.

10,000 hours is probably right I know Gladwell, and have discussed this at length with him, and he's in the ballpark. I've been in the business 35 years and still make mistakes every day The market mistress teaches me something new every day. In my case, I started out in the pit and it took...

    the BEST AG spread is...

Chicago wheat/KCBOT wheat, March contract. Chicago was premium, but is now 2.5 cents lower. Still, a lot of action in that spread. March, May beans were good last week when they traded at the same price. Jeff

backtest for 3 years, blow up in 3 days,

The3 problem here is the fact that the public is always behind the form ande out of phase with a cycle. Something will work, until it stops and nobody will know when the cycle is going to change.

Is Kissing Obama and His Team of Globalist Czars Immoral?

Although I am less than thrilled with recent events, I don't a case of treason against the constitution is applicable here. I don't know what article or amendment has been broken. Treason against the government exists, but treason against the constitution doesn't even exist.

How much $ did you lose until you made $ trading ?

I've been a full time trader since the 70's and I still pay too much and sell too cheap. I'm better than an ATM. Seriously, until you've been in the business for 5 years, in bull and bear markets, you don't know if you'll make it. 5 years is the litmus test, but then again, I know 30 year...
