I had wanted to try to use TradeStation. There model, is that there no free trial. So I had to fund the account. After trying the software, I did not like it. Index futures back testing?

What I do, is look at the associated ETFs. Not the same, but does not need to roll over. So for S&P 500 I use SPY. Years ago, when I used eSignal, they had symbols for futures that were combined into a single asset symbol. Have not used them in years, so not sure how current this is.

Converting from trading 1 asset to a portfolio requires changes to my daily routine

"it's not the number of years that matters it's the number of bars." Mark, Good point. I have found testing longer term strategies over a 20 year period produced "so far" results that I can replicate in real life trading. However, I wish I can get those great % returns of famous traders...

Converting from trading 1 asset to a portfolio requires changes to my daily routine

The reason I switched strategies: - Feel that I lower risk, where I previously put all $$$ in 1 asset, I now spread this out. In addition, back testing has shown better back testing results which include lower draw downs and higher pay out. As was mentioned, 13 times more work, never realized...

Converting from trading 1 asset to a portfolio requires changes to my daily routine

I have recently converted from trading 1 asset as a positional trader to trading a portfolio of 13 assets. Also, I am trading more frequently mostly because I trade more assets. Placing market buy order on market open compared to limit order

2Rosy, I was not talking about a specific exchange. However, I trade mostly ETFs. rb7, But "usually", in you example, you'd be filled at $9.50. Thank you, Larry

Placing market buy order on market open compared to limit order

Example: Stock closed the night before $10. I like that price based on my trading system. So I place a limit order the next day for $10. I really don't like to place a buy on market open, afraid of lack of control. So If the market open is $9.50, will I be filled at $10 or $9.50? Can't a...

Comparing Index ETFs to their Indexes for trading signals

Ph, What an insightful question on the signal generator. So if data is different, of course different results. (Duh... lol). For my testing, I don't want to trust an index going back 20 years data with its base of an ETF going back 8 years. What I also did was test the index and the ETF going...
