    Cannot short RIMM

I tried to short RIMM yesterday, but IB wouldn't let me. I got some cryptic message saying that this share couldn't be shorted. Is this because the share was falling so rapidly that there were no shares to lend me, or are some stocks unshortable?

    How safe are brokerage firms

I believe that IB trades on its own a/c and this is one of their main sources of income  Now, one thing I have learned about trading is that its possible to lose a hell of a lot of money doing it, and if its the case that 'SIPC is kind of a joke' that seems quite worrying

how do u determine if something is statistically significant?

95% is considered statistically significant so 20 trades should be enough. If some situations (testing a nuclear power plant for instance) a higher confidence level would be required, probably 99% Testing a trading system, where all you've got to lose is something trivial like money, you...

    Reaping the whirlwind

I'm not sure that's true. We actually have a very detailed record of the temperatures and atmospheric composition over the last 1000 years from dendrochronology and ice core samples and a reasonable amount of data for up to 10000 years. The last 30 years have shown the biggest rise in...

I wonder if Dick Cheney has been trading HAL...

The same could be said of other insider dealers such as Milken...but it didn't stop them doing it. Its pretty clear to any one who trades that there's a lot of insider activity going on and it would be naive to assume that the top pols and business leaders aren't in on it.

What is the earliest time in the day I can start trading? It seems that some stocks are trading well before the bell.

    Living Well

If you take all the US taxes - local, state & federal - I can't see that there is that much difference between the US & Europe...some European countries (Switzerland for instance) have much lower taxes than the US and some (Sweden) higher.

    dollar weakness

The EU accounts for about 31 percent of world output and 20 percent of world trade (excluding intra-EU transactions). The United States provides about 27 percent of global production and 18 percent of world trade. The dollar's share of world finance far exceeds the economic weight of the United...

:p Everyone outside the US calls soccer football... the point I was trying to make is that culturally and technologically the world follows the European rather than the US standard...doesn't this imply that the European currency will sooner or later become the reserve currency of the world?

    Friends of Rummy

"FDR are familiar initials in US politics. They used to describe an often-re-elected president (Roosevelt) who occasionally showed some concern for the poor and unemployed in his country. There are some more pictures here The shots are from Reuters. "If there is one thing this war has taught us all, it's that we can't believe what we're told. For Donald Rumsfeld these were "breathtaking". For the British Army they were "historic". For BBC Radio they were "amazing"...
