Automated trading on Direxion mutual funds

Hey WinstonTJ, Thanks for the feedback - yes I am aware of differences with Mutual Funds (and I did not mean ETF). The idea is to have an API that performs some checks just before the cutoff time and either buy or sell the fund (to be held overnight). Scottrade has confirmed by email...

Automated trading on Direxion mutual funds

Let's say that I have a succesful strategy for trading Direxion mutual funds that involve placing an order just before the close/end of trading hour. What would you recommend as a broker that supports this (with cheap commissions). I have looked at I but I am not sure the Direxion mutual...

AQR Hedge Fund moving into Trend Following

re: Superfund, yes, this is the issue when CTAs offer multiple funds. I just have to pick one, in this case their traditional Superfund A I'll check Graham, thanks for pointing it out!

AQR Hedge Fund moving into Trend Following

As an FYI, I track some "Trend Following Wizards" monthly performance - which I publish every month on the blog: http://www.automated-trading-system.com/resources/trend-following-wizards-fund-performance/ waiting a bit longer for the January report as all CTAs report at slightly different...

AQR Hedge Fund moving into Trend Following

You are raising an intetresting question - which I was actually asking myself lately. In which case why bother doing trend following just buy these long way OTM options... I havent given it too much thought yet but I cant think of a clear obvious reason why not ie similarly you profit when...

AQR Hedge Fund moving into Trend Following

Agree with what you are saying in terms of mean reverting nature of the markets. However, I would tend to have a slightly different definition of underlying trend following concept In my opinion, (and you can see how I explained it here) price market distributions are leptokurtic - which...

AQR Hedge Fund moving into Trend Following

Thanks makloda, exactly my point :D The probem is that people have a short/selective memory... And many still hold the old Vic as a master trader... There are many other examples, look at LTCM.. And John Meriwhether is opening his new fund after blowing up the one he set up after LTCM...

AQR Hedge Fund moving into Trend Following

Is that the same Niederhoffer that blew up in 1997 and in 2007? (and in 2017?..) I think Trend Following recognizes that you cant predict (which period will be range-bound vs which period will be trending) and adapt by developing a startegy that will "survive" in range-bound periods...

AQR Hedge Fund moving into Trend Following

I think they were more into momentum investing originally, then tried to tap the retail market with mutual funds, now they are attacking another part of the market. I am not sure they care so much about absolute returns - rather about their fees, which they can increase if they beat the relevant...

AQR Hedge Fund moving into Trend Following

valid points, but I think one of the main aspect of trend following is profiting from diversification and I dont know of many instruments that allow you to get access to so many markets - hence why trend followers, in their majority, use futures. Of course, there are stock trend followers also...

AQR Hedge Fund moving into Trend Following

The trend following space is just getting a bit more crowded… The "noise" they are making include a CNBC interview and a marketing research paper. You can find them all, video, paper and a summary of their paper over there... Can there be too many big fish in the pond?

Jack Schwager (Market Wizards) rare video

I havent checked his performance to be honest. I think he is more in the fund of funds business. That would make sense as he wrote that book about Managed Trading and how to pick CTA, funds, analyse performance, etc. Havent read it yet but I expect some ideas might give us food for thought...

Jack Schwager (Market Wizards) rare video

I wonder if the same would apply to me when I start trading the system that I am developping (ie over-estimate my tolerance to "pain"/drawdown)... :p

Jack Schwager (Market Wizards) rare video

you can just give dummy information - there is no email activation link whatsoever. As long as the fields are populated in the correct format it lets you through...

Jack Schwager (Market Wizards) rare video

:p link might look weird indeed but its nothing dodgy (although you're probably right to be on your guard generally ;-) It is just from bit.ly ( http://bit.ly/ ) a url shortener (similar to tinyurl) made very popular by twitter the actual (long) link is...

Jack Schwager (Market Wizards) rare video

Found that cool video from the excellent Market Wizards book author Jack Schwager. The video is pretty long and very interesting and entertaining. This is a recorded talk that Schwager gives to a live audience. Lots of insight on trading psychology, methods and principles of the highly...

Trend Following Wizards: main CTA funds in the red in 2009!

well I guess it depends if you think you can beat the S&P500 or not... Trend Followers clearly can outperform S&P 500 both on short term (cf 2008) and long term .. Check the VAMI chart on that report for example. S&P 500 is not a good representation of how trend following does...

Trend Following Wizards: main CTA funds in the red in 2009!

Not sure what you mean?... How would that tell me how trend following has performed over a range of strategies and instruments for different timeframes? I think this is, as you say, a "lot of work" I am about to embark but I am not sure what shortcut you are recommending (please do expand...

Trend Following Wizards: main CTA funds in the red in 2009!

But yet 2008 was quite outstanding for most CTAs on that list... My assumption is that trend following can be geared to look at many different trend lengths which determine how you get affected by noise/reversals (and the resulting losses). Possibly, CTAs are trying to capture shorter-term...

If you fancy checking out the performance of top CTA trend following funds (Abraham, Chesapeake, Winton Cap, Transtrend, MAN, Eckhardt, Bill Dunn, etc.), here it is: 2009 performance of Trend Following Wizards This is mostly over a diversified portfolio of Futures (including Equities) and...
