Both, of course. Each one is a seperate transaction.

Expected Volatility -- Friday close to Monday morning

Vix typically goes down on friday, and up on monday. Why? Market makers look at the theta decay on options over the weekend, and lower their bids a bit on friday, which causes VIX to drop, on monday, their bids are back to normal, which causes VIX to go back up a bit. Plus you can't...

    Shorting puts- beginner

I took a big hit writing 20 puts on motorola right before they came out with that little warning that pushed the stock down a lot in january, then making the mistake of rolling that position forward instead of closing it out and taking the loss. I also took a hit on AMD when i wrote 15 puts...

    Free Online Trading (limited)

Passive, if it's for an IRA and you're going to do buy and hold, then go for it! It's a great deal! Especially if you contribute like say $200 / month, you can dump that into a few shares of stock w/o having a $10 commission on that. And the catch is, they pay you practially zilch on your...

    Free Online Trading (limited)

depends.. if you want to buy a few shares of a stock and hold it for a long time, go for it. If you're the kind of person who tries to buy 10 different stocks when you only have 5 - 10K, then those deals will save you a ton on commissions. If you're a trader, forget it, use IB or something.

Anybody used the service of Jon Najarian??

I'd rather short options, even with all the times i got blasted on contracts that went bad, i'm still ahead.

Does Wash Sale rule apply to short term Trading?

Worst case scenario, is the IRS accuses you of a wash sale (if they overlook the fact that you made 100 round trips), then you have to explain it to them that it was not a wash sale, and you were day trading, and if need be, show them your records. The wash sale rule is to prevent tax ABUSE...

    Question on buy-writes

No, less money due to extra slippage and commissions. ALTHOUGH, if it's long-term, like a 1 year buy/write, it may be beneficial to do the buy/write, because most brokerages pay less then 5% interest / year, and a covered call vs naked put prices in about a 5% interest rate / year.

Does Wash Sale rule apply to short term Trading?

I'm sure if you're a day trader and have hundreds of round trips every month, nobody's going to accuse you of a wash sale.

    Question on buy-writes

Don't buy-write, sell a naked put instead. (practically) Same position, less slippage, less commissions.

    Shorting puts- beginner

I do naked put writing, and i been doing it for a few months.. I've have multiple positions blow up on me for 200 - 500% losses. My advice to you, is be prepared to take 500%+ losses, they can and will happen. If you cannot accept a loss of > 500% of the premium you collect (and don't...

Are you worried about a correction/end on the gold 'bubble'?

Gold is undervalued, not overvalued. For there to be a "bubble", the item has to be severely overvalued.

How to deal with options' Slippage?

Setting stops on options and buying/selling them at market will get you killed by slippage. Gaurenteed.

    Anyone interview with Optiver?

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but I happened to see and might be interested. 80 questions in 8 minutes seems a bit rough, but if all it is, is adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing 2 digit numbers, I can do those kinds of problems in 2 seconds flat, hell I remember in elementary...

    Buy QQQQ puts

hmmm, well fun, the only reason i can think of that would make that the case, is if the option is so deep ITM (like 100% ITM), that it'd actually be discounted because the writer gets to collect interest on the premium.

IB"security"...nearly cost me my job. awful

Getting one number wrong in a wire transfer instruction is just as bad as getting all the numbers wrong. 1 number wrong means the money's going to another account, or the transfer will bounce because the account does not exist. Same scenario for getting all the numbers wrong. This isn't...
