    Beginner

I'm sure it has been done, but the likelihood is about the same as winning the lottery. If it were that easy, everyone would be doing it -- and they're not.

    Trading Futures vs. Trading Stocks

Futures are much easier to short (no uptick rule, no need to locate shares to borrow). Futures have favorable tax treatment (in the U.S.). Futures have the problem of expiration/contract rollover. The stock market seems to be more automated (except for e-minis). Stocks seem to be more...

    Advice to a newbie

I think the best book overall, at least for shorter timeframes, is "The Market Maker's Edge" by Lukeman. I think the best book on trader psychology and trading as a business is "Trade Your Way to Financial Dreedom" by Tharp. Both books are mis-named but contain good information.

    Risk Management

I think you may be changing your position size too much and too often. There does seem to be some serial correlation in the markets (leading to streaks), but I believe it persists longer than one or two trades. No bet sizing scheme will change your basic expectancy, assuming you are trading...

IB TWS Users: When should I not use SMART Routing?

I'm not sure what the issues were with ARCA, but I think it had something to do with unresponsiveness. Sometimes getting the best price is not the most important thing. Not missing a good move, or dumping a position gone bad, are a couple examples that come to mind. Depending on your...

    backtesting the original turtles

When a trend develops, all good trend-following systems will issue a signal. Some systems will issue a signal sooner than others, which is usually a function of parameter settings and filters. If the trend is a good one, the sooner you enter, the more money you make. If the trend fizzles, the...

    backtesting the original turtles

I did a fair amount of testing on channel breakout (CBO) back in the late 1990's. My conclusion then was that the concept has merit, but that it is very hard for most people (myself included) to implement. What I like about the system is that when a trend develops, I am guaranteed to get an...

Tired of TWS deleting ALL workpages

I think IB is still not doing upgrades properly. The most recent upgrade, for example, was issued last Friday afternoon. Who in their right mind would upgrade their trading software on a Friday afternoon? If something goes wrong, the trader has all weekend to stew about it. Meanwhile, the...

    Using Two WAN Connections

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, it appears that this won't work the way most of us would like. I use IB, and I think it would be a similar situation with other direct access brokers. We can only have one login (and data path) to the broker. If that path is interrupted, the...

    Interpreting Time & Sales

I too have been looking for information on T&S analysis, as well as analysis of depth of market (DOM), for both stocks and index futures. I just finished reading "Techniques of Tape Reading" by Graifer and Schumacher, but unfortunately there was nothing in it about actually reading the tape...

    The Coming Generational Storm

Nothing will happen before 11/2/04, and nobody in Washington cares about (or can see beyond) that date.

    IB and Tradekeeper

I use IB and TK, and both have worked well for me. I imported trades from monthly statements rather than year-end. I also used TK's wash sale adjustment.

Tired of TWS deleting ALL workpages

This just started happening to me. I have been using TWS for a little more than a year, but I was told on another forum that it has been an ongoing problem. Pages are stored in a file called "jts.pg". I noticed if you find a file with a name like "jts.Fri.pg", and rename it to "jts.pg", it...

    More than one OS

I too have Vmware, and it is an amazing product. But my experience is that Vmware is too resource-intensive to be a viable option for trading. With hardware costs so low, I don't see any reason to run multiple OS's on one box.

Has anyone made consistent trading profits with a purchased system?

In the early days I bought and traded with these systems: - PBS by Steve Notis - Swing Catcher by Dave Green - DCS II by Peter Aan - Quad by Joe Bristor That was more than 10 years ago, and I don't have records that far back, but I am pretty sure I made enough with each to cover the...

Has anyone made consistent trading profits with a purchased system?

Your question sounds simple enough, but it contains a couple gotchas. There are systems that have been around a long time that have made money. But all systems have rough periods, and sweating out those rough periods is more than most investors can tolerate. Traders' risk and reward...

    how long does it take?

Some market conditions are friendly toward daytraders than others. If you start at the right time, it's a lot easier. I believe that learning to daytrade is much harder than many claim. Most who try, eventually fail no matter how long they stay with it. There are probably many who could...

    Norton AntiVirus2003

Everybody badmouths Norton, probably because they are a market leader. But I got it with a new system bought in 11/2001, and it has intercepted quite a few email viruses, and as far as I can tell, I have never been infected.

    IB Odd Lots

Only IB can answer for sure, but usually it is dictated by exchange policy. BTW, am I correct that an odd lot is only quantity less than 100? A quantity such as 101 is not subject to odd lot rules?
