Why so many amateur traders trade only against the main trend?

Maybe because they missed the current trends and now think it is too late or can't find entries they perceive as low risk and hope to catch the markets when the trends turn? They'll likely miss that, too.

Beginning and Struggling Traders: START HERE

I wish someone would have directed me to think along the lines Journeyman has laid out when I began trading long ago. The man is right. Hopefully people will take it to heart. Research, do the work and if it doesn't result in a tradeable edge or market characteristic to make money from then...

    Why must I lose?

Nice trading! Maybe you'd fare better by putting your stops some distance below breakeven or even better ignoring breakeven altogether and determine some objective stop rule. You could check past trades to see if that would be beneficial. I observed that people often have an irrational liking...

    Optimization vs Robustness

Yes I think so. Without testing many parameter value combinations one won't know how sensitive the results are to parameter value changes. When you have found a system that is profitable over a wide range of parameter values, one that you can't disprove or invalidate with backtesting...

    Optimization vs Robustness

A lot has been written about this, can keep you busy for a long time. In my experience, when small incremental changes of a parameter value have a big effect on the results a system is not robust. Also when a system tests profitably on only a small range of parameter values it is not robust.

    Why must I lose?

I'd say that is due to cutting losses which is a necessity. Fairly close stops are triggered often, resulting in low win rates. One has to be right on direction and on timing and both can go wrong. High win rate is psychologically nice but if one is interested in profitable trading and has...

Can the U.S dollar become Worthless?

I remember Kostolany comparing the bankruptcy of 3rd world countries to a bum and the bankruptcy of industrialized countries to a bankrupt businessman who still drives in his Rolls Royce in the Cote d'Azur and enjoys the finer things of life. I found that comparison quite apt and still do so...

Trading System vs Trading Method: how different and what differences?

I tend to agree to your description. Some use the term "methodology" for discretionary decision making. A system can be coded and objectively tested. It never leaves the user in doubt about what to do in any given situation. No room for interpretation, gut feel, intuition, x-factor...

Expiration of metals, commodities and agricultural futures

I think I paid about $800 per lot, 10 or 11 years ago. I can't tell you the exact procedure and how much it cost now. Likely more if I wasn't charged an unfair amount.

Expiration of metals, commodities and agricultural futures

It is advisable to be aware of the first notice days of the contracts you hold and liquidate them before that day. You find the FND info on the websites of the exchanges. Should you be assigned delivery you can re-tender the commodity but that costs money like storage or pipeline fees and why go...

Is it possible to achieve the right state of mind for trading?

This has to do with money and success, I believe. Once one has accumulated wealth trading is not stressful anymore. Getting there is the hard part. As long as one is undercapitalized and has not experienced success one is in doubt. The positive feedback that only success gives is missing and...

    Viewing multiple charts?

Quotes-Plus is a good stock database, eod, with fundamentals. Software included to write your own scans. Amibroker works well together with the database, reads the data directly. Together they are a good combination.

I find MS OneNote very good for that purpose. It has a screen capture tool and it is very easy to organize and access information.

How do I get over wanting to "hit home runs?"

First, verify for yourself if it is really correct that all or most of your trades become large moves after you exit early. Memory can sometimes have ways of making one believe things that turn out to be incorrect when thoroughly examined. Check your records, journal etc. Then if it is really so...

    System drawdown

I can't say anything about day trading systems. I do long-term trend following, a different game. If you are day trading you may need different answers. In the past I went through drawdowns of >40% and kept following the signals but it was gut wrenching and the temptation to second-guess the...

    System drawdown

I can tell you from experience long-term trading a portfolio of many commodities and other futures that drawdowns do increase over time; seems to be a normal occurence. They have especially done so during the last couple of years with the increase in volatility in many markets. This lead to a...
