Market orders on futures with IB

How are fills when you place a market order on a futures contract with IB? Are you better off placing a marketable limit order? As I recall, it says in the agreement that they can trade against your order, but do they in a consistent and noticeable manner? I love IB, but not enough to...

Fantastic Article Re How Near The Next Hedge Fund (& Stock Market) Meltdown Really Is

If you believe there is a high probability of a derivatives implosion, how does an average trader play it? It may go on longer than anyone expects, but if and when it breaks it will be too late to do anything. Anyone have some creative strategies they are willing to share?

C:\ Drive Partitions Advice Required ?

I used one of those flat switches on the back of an old computer that switches the voltage. That way it is less likely there would be an "accident". I don't know what would happen if it were switched "hot", but it might not be pretty.

C:\ Drive Partitions Advice Required ?

On a side note: I put a switch on the front of my computer so that I can choose which hard drive is the master and which is the slave, so that I can boot from either one. I am running Ubuntu Linux and XP each on their own disk. With a different type of switch, you could completely turn off...

Would you buy a house, anywhere in the US, right now?

This site is handy for getting a picture of what real estate is doing in Boise. It uses Google Earth and downloads a pin for each listing. http://www.earthpoint.us/ Real estate prices went nuts in the last three years, especially for rural land. Five years ago you could buy a couple...

    IB Suggestions & Improvements

At the risk of sounding like an idiot.... I still can't figure out how to access the poll feature through the link def gave. When I go to the link, I am sent to the account page to obtain a password, but I can't find the place to sign up. Under 'customer service tools' the 'idea box' link...

    IB Suggestions & Improvements

Before you close the thread... I couldn't find the place to sign up for the password on the account management site. Could you give me a hint as to where it is located?

    IB Suggestions & Improvements

IB must spend a lot of money mailing and processing quarterly reports, proxy statements, etc. Is it possible to opt out from receiving them? I hold short term positions, so they go straight into the garbage can, wasting the material they are printed on, the postage, and the labor involved in...

    Database engine: any ideas?

Does anyone have any experience with netCDF? I believe it is used for storing large amounts of climate data, etc. http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/

    Python Programmers

SAGE looks interesting. Has anyone used it or heard anything about it? It looks like a python-centered shell that pulls together a lot of major open-source projects and provides an interface to many commercial apps. http://modular.math.washington.edu/sage/features.html

    Python Programmers

Does anyone have a favorite IDE? I have used idle so far, which has been adequate for my newbie needs, but I am wondering what I have been missing. I fired up Stani's Python Editor and it looks like there are some nice features.

    IB built in charting

Bitstream, Maybe I have a problem or bad setting on my end, then. When I click a different symbol in the portfolio page, (I have the charts set to change symbols by clicking the dot in the upper right corner to red) I occasionaly have a significant delay before they come up. sometimes...

Hotkeys behavior in new IB version

I hate to dredge up a four year old thread, but I have the same problem and can't find/remember the solution. I am plugging in the ole programmable gamepad and setting it to work with my hotkeys. Works great except after you place an order the item you are trading is no longer highlighted...

    http://www.switch2hydrogen.com/

I wonder how much our millions of miles of pavement contributes to global warming? Somebody should think of a way to incorporate solar cells into roads. Yes, maybe that's an idea before it's time since they can't even make roads out of asphalt... Not the roads around my house, anyway.

How's your local housing market doing?

Still booming in Boise, ID. Not too many 'for sale' signs, but we see a million FOR RENT signs. I have relatives who are realtors, and they say out-of-state investors are wetting themselves trying to scramble for available properties. Building lots are scarce and land has skyrocketed, in...

    worst trading books ever

No shill here, I really do like his web site. And like I said, I didn't care for his book. I wouldn't be much of a buddy for steering people away from his money-making book and toward his not-much-money-making web page. -g-

    Python advice on CME datafiles...

More good info... Thanks! As I look into python packages, one potential pitfall I see is that there is often a hierarchy of dependance on other packages. Does this become much of a problem when upgrades are issued?

    worst trading books ever

Just my humble opinion... Farley's web site is much better than his book. http://www.hardrightedge.com/tw.htm I think the info in his articles is a good as anything out there. I'm not sure what it was about the book, maybe the meter, but it seemed to beat you up a bit as you read it.

    Python advice on CME datafiles...

This is some GREAT info!! Thanks a lot. BTW, a hint for new Python users wanting to use pytables: Don't forget to copy hdf5dll.dll, zlib1.dll and szipdll.dll into your system directory from the HDF5 website. It's in the install instructions, but if you're like me and jump in without...
