Were there any that did WELL in 2007? All I ever read about is how they all got smashed in August of that year.

Ended up +126% for 2012. Made some tweaks to the strategy for 2013. Although with vol this low, don't see too many of those big gainer months ahead. And yeah, big drawdowns from time to time, looking for ways to minimize that.

Interesting thread. I agree with the whipsaw the moving average does on you. My answer was to cut the moving average to 50%. That way if your strategy does start failing, at least you took some risk off the table, whereas if your strategy goes on a tear, at least you didn't sell everything.

What attributes do you all look for in your respective strategies for downside protection? Besides the typical stop loss. My trading strategy is longer-term, so I use a moving average overlay over the entire underlying strategy. i.e. if the 10-day SMA of the underlying strategy goes below...

This is true - but this would be an event where the market just drops straight for all the days before you rebalance. If there are gyrations (like August 2011), you actually can survive this. -If you rebalance daily, you won't get enough (any) alpha to offset the short costs. -If you wait to...

If you are trading it daily, then yes, you will be screwed. Who gives a crap about the spread when there is a 3-5% monthly roll yield (tail wind) in your favor.

Dude, you need to learn about compounding returns. 1) That's 85% profit per year on average. Still ridiculous. Just compounded. Think about it. 2) Simple, you go short VXX or buy the inverse, XIV. All your base are belong to us.

Updated Results: Jul: +6.40% Aug:+16.04% Sep:+22.53% Oct: -5.52% Nov: +4.32% This month I am getting whipsawed like a SoB. November was similarly sucky.
