    S&P500 P/E 13.73 w/o GM?

noddyboy, I guess Bloomberg's numbers are based on actual earnings that have come in and maybe some of the spreadsheet's numbers still haven't been updated to reflect the most recent earnings announcements. Plus, the Bloomberg estimate probably uses operating earnings since the number they have...

    S&P500 P/E 13.73 w/o GM?

Changed my post, making further edits now, I just took the current quarter from the spreadsheet, thinking it was the year, I still don't see where Bloomberg's number is coming from, though, these #s are straight from Standard and Poors. I'll see if I can come up with Bloomberg's #, it's...

    S&P500 P/E 13.73 w/o GM?

GM's earnings for the year have been terrible (not saying anything new here). Yahoo Finance has them as -$53.3. The S&P 500 aggregate P/E is calculated by adding all of the earnings of the companies together and then dividing the current price of the S&P 500 cash index by that aggregate...

Who typically trades ES after hours?

It follows the pivot points very well at night from what I've seen, and it's fairly easy to tell when a move is starting because you'll get a surge of volume. I think someone probably just owns an algorithm that starts pushing it in a direction by putting a large bid or ask out there, then...

After November 2010, trading of futures, stocks and FX will no longer be viable :(

Interesting. Here's a scan of the original article the predictions were in: http://www.sabahforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=7925 Don't know how good the translation is, and I have no idea what publication the article appeared in, but I think this post is the original of the...

S&P 500 Will Rise to 1,100 This Year, Leuthold Says

The Dow went from about 100 to about 160 in 1938, and this year has been compared to that year a lot. So, it's possible. It would also be a very nice breakaway gap fill at ~1080.

    Tasr

6.2 days of average volume needed for all the shorts to cover, definitely could be a short squeeze in it if it keeps moving higher: http://www.shortsqueeze.com/?symbol=tasr&submit=Short+Quote%99 I think your wildcard at the moment, though is very overbought state of the general market.

    Use E-mini instead of SPY?

I thought the symbol was SP, and SPX was the actual index, but regardless, there's a big contract and a mini one. The big one is 5x the value of the mini one (mini is $12.50 per tick, big one is $50, tick is $.25 on the value of the S&P 500). The YM is the Dow, NQ is the Nasdaq 100, there's...

    SEC may Reinstate Uptick Rule

I wasn't arguing. I'm just trying to figure out what it means exactly in terms of the market.

If you knew when the next major down move will be

How big do you think the move will be? That will in part determine how far OTM you want to go. You usually want to buy as close to the event date as possible for the biggest percentage move in the option.

    SEC may Reinstate Uptick Rule

So, it looks as if they won't be exempt. What does this mean? Can MMs operate normally? How in the world does the SEC even enforce it if the controls are normally in the brokerage software, MMs are normally their own brokerage, right?

Soros says U.S. faces "lasting slowdown"

Don't forget there are two possible components to inflation. Actual demand for goods and money velocity are one component, and that's not going to be a concern for a while I think. The other component is what the other guys in the world think of your currency, and that's the wildcard here...

Turning $27K into $1,000,000 in only 9 months...

Serious question, if you can make $50k in 6 days, which amounts to over $2 million/year, and you have a tendency to gamble in the market occasionally, wouldn't the prudent thing to do be to take 1/2 your profit *out* totally every week. That seems to be the only real discipline you need.

    What is happening to men?

I guess I take a different view. I'm fairly certain the layoffs hitting the men more than women has more to do with the men getting paid on average more and the women being in more recession proof fields like teaching. Engineering and construction are getting hit especially hard right now, and...

    All Eyes on VIX

Gold's not just a fear indicator of markets going down, though. There's two types of fear today - fear of the market crashing and fear of runaway inflation. Not saying whether those fears are right or not - but they're there. So, I don't think gold will necessarily track stocks.

    automotive bankruptcies and systemic risk

It will make synthetic CDOs have to have a portion paid back. This might have a big effect on the market. It's actually a good thing for the banks, bad for the charities, municipalities, etc, that bought them.

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

Math_Wiz, nope, self-employed don't get unemployment insurance. Makes you wonder about the unemployment figure, huh?

Bob, how do you decide whether to trade the stock or use an option? I've noticed some option trades sprinkled in the mix occasionally.
