Buy a Call Option v Sell a Put Option

The option you chose depends on your outlook on the stock. If you think the stock will move up quickly, then buy the call option. If you think the stock will meandering and move up slowly, then sell the put option. Call options need the stock to move up quick (faster than the time decay) to...

Anyone else issues with data box?

Yes, I have the same problem. The work around for me is to change the time frame to something else before going back. This seems to solve the problem for awhile.

Is using as many as possible timeframes for same market advantageous?

No, not really. Linda Raschke once said: "Give a man a watch and he'll know the time. Give him 3 watches, he may not know the time since each watch may show a different time". For me, I find that when I trade a single time frame, I am able to make decisive decisions. With multiple time frames, I...

Not a newb, but with a newbie question

Depending on the broker. Some brokers charges you 2x commission (open & close) when you initiate a short options position on a futures contract. They want their commission just in case you let the option expire. If you brought back the short option, no additional commission is charged.

Cord cutting spree, anyone use Magic Jack here?

I recommend Ooma. It works great. If you don't want any extra features, all you pay is the approx $5 in taxes per month. It does require a one time purchase of their VOIP box. You can do voice/fax calls. Sound quality is great, if you have upload speed of 1mb/sec or better.

IB TWS connection problems at work. Desperate...

You can consider buying a NUC (tiny PC) and use that as your trading system. The NUC can be very powerful systems. They are like a tiny desktop PC. You need to attach a keyboard/mouse and monitor to them. I recommend using a virtual KVM such as Input Director (Windows only). Input Director is a...

I tried day trading options on index futures, but my returns were less than outright futures trades.

For those of you who use multiple TFs to trade

Yes, I use options. If I am buying options, I would select ATM, about 30 days out. If I am selling options, I would select OTM delta of 20 or less, 60+ days out.

For those of you who use multiple TFs to trade

I trade multiple time frames. I use a longer time frame for signal and use a shorter time frame for entry and exit. The shorter time frame allows me to exit quicker. I expect my trading signals to develop quickly. If they don't I exit quickly. I miss out on slow developing trades, but that's OK...

How do I develop my day trading strategy?

Pick a time frame you are comfortable. Don't use sub-minute charts because of the data lag. Use whatever type of charts/indicators you feel comfortable. Next look at the charts of the contracts you wish to trade over past few months. Look for patterns you think you can exploit. Look at the past...

Selling deep ITM puts to harvest losses

You own 100 shares of GE. Sell the 100 shares of GE for a loss of $10. Next, buy 1 Sept 22 call 24.5 strike for $0.04. Selling deep ITM puts to harvest losses

If you really want to take the losses this year, you can do it with call options. What you do is sell the stocks for a loss and buy a cheap short term call option. Next day, buy back the stocks you sold. On the following day sell the call option for a loss. This loss can be deducted because the...
