strategy vs discretional trading in the ES/NQ

Do you mean, you have various strategies, each governed by a set of rules, and you choose which to follow as the situation permits? And maybe, in each set of rules, there are parameters you can set on the fly, such as profit target and initial stop?

Was today a blowoff top in DOW/NAZ?

Is your QChart data unusually slow today?

Haven't had any problems with the data feed with QCharts. It may depend on where you are. Austin, TX here. It's a fraction of a second behind the feed from my broker, but still reliable.

strategy vs discretional trading in the ES/NQ

We all have our own experiences... I lost money until I developed a mechanical system. Maybe others can sit down and print money at will. I can't. Seems like the answer to the question would depend on the person.

What lapse of discipline pisses you off the most?

That stuff used to bug me, until I realized I did not have the power to predict the future (darn). What I fight on a daily basis is the urge to trade outside of the system. My wife calls it gambling genes.

    Pivot Point Trading Strategy

QCharts has a "volume at price" study which is very good to identify support and resistance levels. Seems to work a little better than "time at price" i.e. looking for levels on the bar or candle chart, because you can be fooled by low volume trading stretches.

My Beef Against Contrarian Sentiment TA

So you think that the majority is wrong about the majority being wrong? More evidence that the majority is always wrong. Heh. Seriously, Murphy's futures book says in a nutshell what you are saying. In particular he says chances are the trend will continue as long as open interest keeps...

How have you done in this latest rally?

"The market acts to frustrate the greatest number of traders" Also check out the COT report on the ES... unbefreakinleavable.. the small spec is 87% bullish with open interest doubling since mid March. I would say the fuel is in the air, we're set up for a big pullback, don't hold your...

    Systems "done gone wrong"

Anybody have stories about your systems that started out great but then "done gone wrong." If you'd like to share 'em, the more details the better (time scale, what was traded, bet size relative to account size, entry/ exit rules). Backtesting 70 mph turns always produced good results...

How Much $$$ for Slippage and Commission?

Don't let these guys piss in your cheerios. You've got the right idea. But be skeptical of your systems enough to keep probing them. And it is always true that anything can happen, so trade small. You can open an IB account with 2k and download a free simulator for TWS. Forward test those...

    System Distribution Kills Profitability?

First answer the system independent question: how much volume does it take to move the emini market. Order of magnitude, you'd need 10,000 knuckleheads subscribed to the same service, assuming they all take the signals (which they won't). But just for fun assume they do. With emini's...

Two Setups is All You Need?

All you really need is one setup and the ability to execute it (i.e. stick to the rules, easier said then done). A lot of folks talk about systems that stop working. I say it's not the system's fault, if it is a good system. A good system extracts winners from a particular type of market...

    Cumpulsive Trading

When I had the problem, I think it stemmed from a lack of confidence in my ability to be a winning trader, time and time again. Until you have that confindence, you will never bet properly. You can get the confidence from trading a system, your own preferably. And see the "Brain Kills...

    Now Documented: Brain Kills Profits

This system had more trades today and it was easy to stick with it. I didn't have those urges to make discretionary trades. In fact, instead I jotted down a few ideas about how I might change the system to incorporate some more market action. I'm going to back test them and see if there are...

    Now Documented: Brain Kills Profits

I think Peg Leg summed it up best in his earlier post. I was making secret discretionary trades under cover of a system, not "tweaking" the system like I thought when I started the thread. Tweaking means making adjustments to the system. In fact I didn't change the system at all. I was...

    Now Documented: Brain Kills Profits

I'm happy to report I followed the method exactly today even though I didn't want to. Man, I just don't like to make the same mistake twice. So now I feel like a big winner even though I had a small whipsaw loss-- turns out what I felt like doing would have led to a loss twice as big. On to...
