Do You Listen To The News While Trading?

Only for breaking news. I have CNBC in the background all the time, but don't listen to it much. The markets will obviously move before the info is on the screen, but I like to know what caused a move sometimes to estimate its "staying power". I may join a move if some major shit has hit the...

    Portland, OR

Since almost all the Hood River thread emails were Portland based, I thought this would be a more appropriate forum title. We are meeting for the first time this Sunday. Still unsure of the place and time, but I will post the details here. This is going to be a very informal "talk shop"...

Who Do You Trade E-Minis Through?

Can you place bracket orders on actual fills? No! Each leg can get hit before the trade you really want! Can you change volume on the fly? No! Pro trade platforms like X Trader, or Ffast trade's platform, HAVE buttons where you can manage size as you go without going through a ton of...

    Futures commissions at prop firms

I am not one to say anything negative on this forum, but what you've said makes no sense. A pro trader will regularly have draws more than 5% many times in a given year. I personally risk 3% per trade, and have been down 15% in one day about five times per year (that's my cutoff). Jay

    How about Hood River?

How is that even possible? I burned out on skiing after doing it full time for many years, but no way will I burn out on sailing. Way too much to learn, and I'll never master the sport (not sure anyone can other than Robby). If ya pop into town, put a notice on this message board first, and...

    How about Hood River?

Moving to Hood River for the windsurfing season. I miss trading in a room with other traders, and would be willing to turn my pad into a trading operation with others if anyone else is interested. Or, even better, openning an office if I can find five guys or so. I only trade futures, but the...

Who Do You Trade E-Minis Through?

People like IB cause they are the cheapest for small accounts, and you can trade a wide variety of stuff from a single account. I have found the support to be adequate, but not excellent. My biggest grip is their trade platform. Its pretty weak compared to X Trader or Ffast Trade's platform...

    Dow Eminis

Less liquidity. When it picks up, like I think it will, I will trade it. Too thin for my liking now. The CBOT is marketing it well though. Jay

The toughest trading year for veteran traders

For stock traders, I would say this year so far has been tough. For futures traders, its been pretty good (plenty of volatility, direction doesn't matter). Jay

Finished with a 5% drawdown? That would finish every trader I've ever seen. Maybe you meant 50% Jay

    Financial instruments and daytrading

You got this backwards. Slippage in the emini S&P is virtually nil (1 tic spreads and its electronic with massive liquidity). My stops get filled better than expected just as ofen as the other way around. This results in virtually zero slippage. The big contract is pit traded. All sorts of...

    Futures commissions at prop firms

You can already get more leverage than you need at IB. One half day trading margins will give you 2 contracts per trade with a 5K account. Add another $500 to the account and you can make that three per trade. Do you really want to trade more than this with a $5500 account? That's suicide unless...

    Futures commissions at prop firms

Ffast trade at $3.32, but you need decent volume to make up for the platform. Spike quoted me $3.72, but again, platform fees drive up the cost somewhat. Any retail firms lower than this? Jay

Daytrading from your Roth IRA account...

The Feb issue of this mag also has an article by Green (who posts here occaisionally) which states that if you "trade" more than 25% of your IRA, it could be considered taxable income. He gave no further details than this however. I do not know how a trust would work in this case.. If gobs of...
