Can someone help me understand broker fee structure

This is not quite right. For trading stocks, you need to factor in the SEC fee above what you pay for commissions. It is a percentage of the total dollar transaction regardless of number of shares. These days the SEC fee is so high that you really can't make money scalping for a 1 cent in/out.

Build Your Own - Step by Step ( i7 2600k)

Congrats Tiki! This thread has received the pin-up status that it deserved! :) How's your new build (not so new now) working? I built my 2 boxes 2 years ago and they have been running well without any down time. Is it time to shop for new ones? Coronas I meant... :D

Need advice for new trading computer

The SSD... solid state disk... is a misnomer. Where is the DISK? There is no disk. Nothing is spinning. SSS for solid state storage is more proper. Often times the SSD is overrated. Yes the boot up is fast, and data access is fast. But it seems a waste trying to put everything on a SSD...

    new power supply unit

It is very unlikely that a faulty power supply will cause a computer to slow down. It either works, or causes the computer hardware to fail. Computer slow down is most likely software related. Gotta find out where the CPU cycles went. A simpliest thing to do is to start Windows Task...

    Projector specs

I suppose so. This is a trading forum, I would have thought... Even with watching TV or movies, from a direct light device (LCD, LED) is so much better than from a projector - reflected lights. Unless they want a 100-inch projected screen area. The plasma and LED have gone up to 70-inch...

    Projector specs

Any good reason to? Are we teaching a dozen of kids how to trade? Images from a projector are dim and hard to read. Unless the room is pitch dark. It is far harder to read than the direct lights from the LCD screen, or even better - LED screen. If run multiple monitors, you would need...

    Pictures of your trading stations

It s not a big deal. The easiest approach is to get a motherboard that offers 3 PCIeX16 slots, and get 3 small, inexpensive (that they don't draw a lot of power) dual graphics cards. (I use EVGA 8400 GS cards.)

Need advice for new trading computer

It is a USD $600 card shopped as new. It is more than the CPU and motherboard together. The question is why. If one is looking for a motherboard to house the CPU, choosing one that offers more PCIeX16 slots would offer more lower cost options to equip the graphics card(s).

Need advice for new trading computer

No need to be overly harsh. mgookin is a regular here and often makes good contributions. It is from a price-point perspective that I would, too, advocate using 2 x PCIx16 to drive 4 monitors. Yes sure you can pick up the Eyefinity card. 1 card drives 4. 1 card drives 6. Maybe even 1...

Need advice for new trading computer

I am happy to report that the Bolimomo brand Model T computer, 2 units made, ran without a hitch for the past 2 years. All from of- the-shelf parts bought from Fry's. It is not as fast as the Intel i7-2600k. But still decent. Only if TradeStation can get their act together to properly...

Internet Speed Shootout! What's your speed!

< 1Mbps: 19.2k modem on dial-up, or really bad signals on wifi 1 Mbps - 5 Mbps: DSL 5 Mbps - 20 Mbps: cable modem 20 Mbps up: FIOS, or photoshoped speed LOL
  12. B

which high speed internet connect to use?

Given the availability, FIOS should be the first choice. Cable modem second. DSL is last resort, or use as a backup. The throughput are much better with fiber or cable. DSL is going through the same pair of wires that are used for your telephone. There are limitations on how fast they can...

Be warned... 24tb is the new 500gb

What is a "hard drive"? Mine was an Apple II+, with 48K RAM. That is "K" as in Kay, not Mag. And a 5 1/4-inch floppy drive (wow!). You boot from ROM, and load your app from floppies. 10MB hard disk: full height 5 1/4-inch, (from IBM a few years later) was a huge wow for us...

Could it be that they store the historic price data on every tick on every stock for algo back testing? :) TB is cheap these days. Under $100 per TB. 50TB? Pocket change. This is not 1985... (when Back to the Future came out...)

    Computer standby issue

Windows XP is like a workhorse. It just works and works and is quite stable after so many years. If you have older hardware and are contended with the current configuration, don't change it. On the other hand if you have some newer processor - maybe starting with Intel i3/5/7 class - even...

    Builidng a trading/gaming hybrid computer

This is not a good idea. If you are going to buy an Eyefinity card for your games, buy one that supports all the monitors that you will be using. Gaming cards will be much more power than what trading needs. There is no need to put in a Quadro card. Typically mixing different graphic...

    HP H8qe and 4 monitors

I would not read too much into the Intel onchip/onboard graphics. It is just not that important in trading applications. The graphics performance may be more important for laptop users, who relies more on the onchip/onboard GPU. On a desktop, you can easily buy an external video card (some...

    Ivy Bridge coming on Monday...

I used that loosely. Number of transistors doubled in every 2 years. Speed, memory capacity... doubled every 18 months or something. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore's_law Just that my point it I would be looking for a "double" improvement in next then next then next then next...
