Geeks trump alpha males as algos dominate Wall St

I wonder where deepest New Jersey is? Summit? Also, I misread it as "swashbuckling backstabbers", heh.

GM plans to invest $700M in Michigan for Volt

There's still a waiting list for the Prius, despite Toyota running its plants 24 hrs/day. There is huge demand for these cars. Plus, GM has to spend very little of its own money on this, given that the govt is giving out billions in grants for electric car manufacture. If it fails, it's still...

    Trader Tax

If someone buys $550K worth of a single stock, he is not an average or small investor. The average investor buys mutual funds; mutual funds are exempt from the tax.

    Trader Tax

The PDT rule was to protect brokers who ran the risk of having small daytrading clients blow out their accounts but had very little compensation otherwise - a daytrader doesn't generate much in margin interest, and small account daytraders don't have much in their account for the broker to lend...

    Trader Tax

DeFazio wants to curtail speculative activity that causes commodities to needlessly go up in price. He's focused on oil in particular. Speculative activity in self-contained ecosystems like casinos, sports, etc. doesn't drive up prices for our daily necessities. Also, casinos in NJ are taxed...

how to get around the pattern day trading rule

You can protect gains in an option trade by turning it into a vertical spread.

Why bother with HLDRS when you can just replicate?

OIH has no management fees, and as far as I can tell the expenses are $8/yr/100 shares. If you can buy a basket of stocks for less than that, go for it.

Reasons for Why you need multiple accounts, multiple IPs, and multiple brokers

Good grief, you're either an outstanding troll, or, well, I don't know. What you think the words "simulated trading" that are emblazoned on every page and every chart mean?

Price Manipulations by Market Maker of PWE

At the moment you posted your message, it was 8:40PM and the market was closed. I looked at a chart for that day and didn't see any 5% swings (low 18.07, high 18.48). Also, how does an MM who handles 2 million shares a day manage to find time to pick on you, specifically? Maybe you're talking...

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

Has anyone tried to quantify what the effect might be in the equities that main street investors are most likely to buy? e.g. what might S&P 500 stocks' spreads become, and how much extra would this cost a self-directed investor over his average hold time? Another thing to factor in is the...

IRAs and mutual funds are exempt from the tax. Traditional buy-and-hold investors will not be taxed.

    New option symbols

Brokers are also putting their own spin on the new symbols. Schwab says they're going to display the expiration date fields as month/day/year instead if yearmonthday. One thing that's not clear to me is whether the new option root with be the same as the old option root or whether it will be...

Solars, ever going to come bACK?

I am out of my long SPWRA as of this morning. It's had a nice 15% pop over the past week courtesy of upgrades coupled with high short interest. I don't particularly feel good about making money in situations like this, since it's just dumb luck and not verification that I was right about the stock.

$10 an hour with 2 kids? IRS pounces

There is so much class envy here that an income tax will never go away. There is talk of a VAT in •addition• to the income tax. Some liberals (not legislators, so far) are even suggesting a wealth tax, that is, a tax on one's assets, for the ultra rich.

"I Will Crush Elite Trader"-- Tim Sykes

I visited investimonials.com, and right on the home page there's a large area devoted to "Highest Rated Financial Products". The default is stock brokers, and the highest rated is American Century Investments. Clicking on that link brings you to a page that shows it has an overall rating of...

    $50 Buffalo Proof Clad

I also don't understand the attraction of state quarter collections where they plate them with an unspecified amount of gold and platinum (probably just enough to mask the fact that the coins are not really uncirculated) and charge ~ $2 apiece for them. How do you determine what a fair price is?

If gold goes up, but the stock market goes down, will gold stocks go up or down?

It may be instructive to look at the charts on a divergence day, such as Friday when, in the morning at least, the market moved up big and gold moved down big. Compare SPY, GLD, and a miners stock like GDX, for example.

1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

The constitution doesn't go into detail about taxes. A head tax or, as someone else pointed out, an inheritance tax are legal. Also, you pay a section 31 tax every time you sell stock, regardless of whether you made a profit.

    Anyone tried eOption.com?

It's not just what they told me, it's what I observed. My order would lock or even cross the market, although the crossed market would only last a few seconds and I'd get filled. So, specifically: If the spread is 1.05x1.15, and one broker routes a buy order for 1.10 to CBOE (because that's...
