If you hold overnight positions/swing trade, how do you hedge against gaps up/down?

i agree this is a good option but the cynical part in me doesn't trust anything that's not exchange traded and cleared. what happens if your counterparty to the note/swap goes bust like BSC or LEH? or what happens if they refuse to pay you like GS did w/ michael burry w/ his housing CDS?

    Beginner's Laptop Choice

IMO the features of an ultrabook aren't worth the extra cost. why pay $1k when you could get the same specs that count like ram/processor/etc for 80% less (if you buy used/refurb)

If you hold overnight positions/swing trade, how do you hedge against gaps up/down?

this is an issue that is very overlooked yet could by itself blow you up if not prevented. if you're using leverage of any kind - futures/options/cfd/whatever - and there's another 9/11/flash crash/black swan then you're done if you haven't hedged. for example, what if you're long futures and...

    Beginner's Laptop Choice

check out dell's outlet or dell refurbished. or try craigslist if you really want to save money. before even going to look at the comp confirm the owner has all of the original cds/docs so you can immediately run dban on it and start from scratch. you could prob pick up a good one for $100 USD

    Does anyone get "Futures Magazine"

i can confirm the mag is free online. i've been reading it for years now - some value added though considering it's free and it only takes about 2 mins to scan through the articles to see if there's something worth reading it's not hard to add some value.

    scanning 60-min. and 30-min. charts

Nutinsider - TOS (now TDA) is real time. re the last post - you can write a code to scan for anything - esp something as simple as "price is below previous day close". some software programs are caveman simple (stockfetcher.com) how IIRC it's not real time but it's perfect for EOD use. i...

Anybody have a career related to markets, but no necessarily trading?

i hope you're kidding re being lazy. if you're not 110% committed to the test you will fail - period the end. Read thru the study sets multiple times then take the practice tests then repeat til your eyes bleed then repeat... Source: guy who passed levels 1-3 the first time by passing the...

Where's the best place to buy a new computer

the main components you need to focus on are the amount of RAM (esp if you're trying to run 25 charts and 55 tabs and excel and an api) and the video card to handle multiple monitors - and a minimum dual core but almost every comp has that now.

    Best Anti Virus

although i've said this before, it can't be repeated often enough: MSE + firefox (or chrome) + adblock + noscript = elimination of 99.9 repeating% of problems. remember the PICNIC acronym - problem in chair not in computer seriously there are enough expenses in trading - you shouldn't...

    scanning 60-min. and 30-min. charts

i know tradestation allows this. most of the other big brokerages allow for this too. if you don't have access to this you're going to have to pay for the scanning - no one will provide real time intraday scanning for free AFAIK.

Scalping OTM time premium near close on expiration Friday

+1. i've said the below story on other options threads on et re this exact same issue (selling otm calls for "free" premium" esp so close to expiry). a company (not sure the name anymore) announced it was being acquired at 4:01 EST on expiry day. the problem for those who sold a boatload of...

    what are the odds?

agree w/ everything except for what daring said re using no stops. what happens the one time he goes outside to paint his house and comes back in to find the spx locked limit down b/c of a dirty bomb attack in ny? bottom line, no one is "out to get you", yes you will bottom tick the...

    Short sale question TSLA

the whistling leaf is correct re most retail accounts not getting lending fees. your broker keeps 100% of them in almost every case. if your account is a margin one that is. if you really want to stick it to your broker, change your account to cash so your shares aren't lendable as the leaf...

there is a lot of resistance at 65 - 50 and 200 dma as well as price of open on earnings day. i would look to short around there and put a stop slightly above.

    Rim

there's somewhat of a floor to this stock given it has around 2.3B in cash (and the company actually adding about $100mm last q when the analysts were expecting a drain) and the fact that that the rimm franchise still have some value. disclaimer: i currently own a blackberry but will be...

    Earning results and trading

if price moves b4 earnings release it's b/c traders are getting flat/putting on positions before the release. bloomberg is usually the fastest to report the release (terminal subscribers not the tv channel and def not the website open for the public). you will NOT get the news first by...

Long-Term Oil Price Charts on Interactive Brokers

b/c of contract rollover the only option you have is a continuous contract. try cl for oil and gc and si for gold and silver respectively. fyi the contango, backwardation isn't that big of a deal for gc/si as it is for cl.
