50 Day Moving Average

Well, I thought I'd heard of everything. But this is a new one on me. Time spent below and above and MA? Well...who knows.

    Advice from the experienced

Well, think about. If you were a stock trader, would you want 1000 other traders jumping into your alerts with a thousand shares each? It would kill your system, so why share it? I don't trade indexes, but I suspect the same fear exists there. A million shares hitting the market on a...

    Advice from the experienced

Try 15 hours a day for the next two years in backtesting, plus quite a few grand spent in losing trades and finding your comfort area. But...it can be done. There are many paths to the goal, and you need to put in the time to find what works for your personality, your assets, your time, and...

    S&P Expectations?

I trade stocks, and have been considering S&P futures to fill in some gaps, as my primary stock system leaves me with extra time and capital to put to work. I have a few initial questions and would appreciate a little guidance. 1. What should my expectations be for a decent return in an...

    Playing the market Long-Only.

Absolutely you can make money long-only, even in a downtrend. Conceptually, think of a ball bouncing down a flight of stairs. The trend of the motion is down. But the ball will bounce off every step. That's a long trading opportunity. I trade a long-only system that thrives in tough...

    Swing Trade EXITS...

A very small percentage of my trades ever hit the full stop. My system requires a wide stop in order that trades can have room to move, as I buy stocks that are completing a severe correction. Moving the stop tighter in my case just takes me out of many trades that would have gone on to profit...

    Best Backtesting software

Why wasn't Investor RT included in the list? There are a number of traders on this site who backtest with IRT.

    Swing Trade EXITS...

I look for a 4% gain, a 10% stop, or out after 5 days if neither of those are hit. When price hits a 4% gain, I hold until the close of the day, as a strong move will very often continue until the close. This is a very difficult thing to do from a psychological standpoint, but over time...

    Do indicators work?

Not if you relate current price (high, low, open or close) to indicators. That's the key. People often get into difficulty when they try to use the indicators themselves for trading signals.

    Do indicators work?

I swing trade an extremely profitable system based solely on daily MAs and intraday price levels. So I believe it is a generalization to say that technical indicators aren't useful.

    Upgrading Win ME to XP

If you bought the lower priced upgrade version of XP, then you will have problems because you are still dealing with the DOS-evolved ME. I got stuck with that as well. I ate the bucks and bought the full version of XP, and everything is fine. It is the upgrade that is the problem, and as...

    Profit Taking Strategy

Assuming that you are long in the trade, my experience and all my backtesting indicate that you should at least wait until the end of the bar to close the trade, no matter what exit system you are using. The logic here...and the reality...is that more often than not strength will continue into...

    MILITARY POLL

During times of War, one's previous military service has a profound affect on one's present psychology. This can affect trading. If my previous military experience (1968-72), had a profound affect on my trading, I should be stoned right now. Unfortunately, that isn't the case.

    Your Decision and in-retrospect

At one time I had a successful film production firm. When I sold it, I had capital for another business, but not enough for complete financial freedom. After looking at many alternatives, I looked at the advantages of trading as a BUSINESS. And that's the way I look at it. I pay no rent...

Do you talk to your computer when you trade?

I don't talk to my computer, it talks to me. Says "Buy" and "sell" and "Alert". Seriously. I put thousands of hours into training my system when to trade successfully. Now, I just follow instructions. Boring, and profitable.

    Hire a CPA or not?

Sorry to hear that you would toss and turn without a CPA. Some folks are actually factual and yes, really can do it themselves when it's basic stuff.

    Hire a CPA or not?

My advice would be, if you are filing with Trader status and taking full deductions for expenses, a home office, etc., you should go with a CPA for protection and advice. If you are simply filing a sched D without Trader status, do it yourself.

    Keeping It Simple II

I've been trading stocks with success for a couple years, and have been intrigued by all the talk about trading the S&P and the e-mini as a possible complement to my primary system. Because I like to keep things simple, I was drawn to these threads. But....duh! You folks make space travel...
