If I got a long put hedging a stock bought on margin, does it have an impact on a margin call? Say it's 2to1 margin and the stock declines 50%, will the long put prevent a margin call?

I'm trying to brush up on the fundamentals and economics of ags and softs but i don't know where to start. I can read the govt reports but I don't know what I'm looking at. Where can I learn about the workings of the ags so these crop reports start to make sense?

If I go long the ssf to capture the discount, I'm exposed to the downside. Could I hedge by shorting the next month ssf, or using options?
