Reverse engineering why indicators don't work

Yes, MA's are an indicator of what has happened, not an indicator of what is to come. That said, what price has done indicates what price will probably do next, and as MA's clarify price action, they also clarify what price will probably do next. Yes, trends can reverse abruptly, but most do...

    becoming emotionless

I find it funny when day-traders speak about trading trying to trade without emotion. Or with emotions but kept under control. Its like fish complaining about how difficult it is keeping everything dry. I get quite emotional when my account gets bigger.

Reverse engineering why indicators don't work

"Best" has to be derived from the trader's individual strategy. So there can't be one "best" MA for everyone at any given time, though they may all say they are trend-following this same market. Of course, "best" cannot simply be measured by something universal, like % gain per day for example...

To quantify it against other trends, to select the best?

Reverse engineering why indicators don't work

This is bold. Confirming and evaluating trends is surely what MA's are all about? themickey seems to be saying if the slope of the MA is upwards or downwards (its value increasing or decreasing) this indicates a continuation of trend. Why do you say the MA's slope doesn't define trend?

    This goddam eternal bull market...

Yep. I love traders who see this game as a personalised head to head battle with other private retail traders. They're like little kids scrapping in the middle of a motorway. They might get in a good punch or two. But they're still going to get squashed by the big artic that's coming.

    Swingers

From standard available indicators would Average True Range give a decent approximation, say as a %age of most recent close?

It would take an ‘immaculate conception’ to create bear market in stocks right now: analyst

Two helpful TA rules I'm keeping in mind to avoid most price falls. Exit equity / index longs if either - 20EMA crosses below 50EMA price closes below 50EMA These two rules would have got you into cash before 16 of the 20 worst single day price falls on the Dow since 1900. Including the 1929...

Reverse engineering why indicators don't work

People do say buy a new high - but they don't like to call it that. They like to say buy the break-out. Then these don't buy high buy the break-out merchants criticise me for buying in an uptrend and that its obviously too late to get in so I'm going to be buying high when I really should buy...

Trading Winning Positions - The optimal approach

Its a simple approach but easier to do than explain. The idea is to have multiple trades opened at the same interval as the trend continues. Each trade has the same risk in £. Only the last trade loses £ capital, the one before it breaks even and all the others lose each the same risk in £ but...

That will work. Same as whatever you eat while standing up, the calories don't count.

What % of Hedge Funds/Institutions actually make money?

I used Yahoo to find Google, but as Yahoo is not one of my Favourites since 1999, I had to Google Yahoo first.

Trading Winning Positions - The optimal approach

Sorry to cause confusion - yes, b/e means break-even but I meant to say price. A second buy order would trigger at first trade's entry plus 87pts, then the first trade's stop is moved to entry, which is b/e. A new trade opens every 87pts higher and all previous stops are raised 87pts at the...

This pretty good too. I might have added that I try to avoid eating rice, potatoes and bread after 1pm.

Trading Winning Positions - The optimal approach

The standard advice on adding to a profitable position is to wait for a new valid entry signal and enter there. Traders are usually advised to move their stop on the first trade to at least b/e and possibly reduce it at the same time. I go against these rules. I always add a duplicate trade to...

What is the Best Way to Lose 20 pounds and keep it off...

This is pretty good. Definitely give up Coke etc. and all snack foods. You need sufficiently large balanced meals but nothing in between. Exercise needs to significantly raise pulse rate to increase your metabolic rate. Then you need to do enough to keep the metabolic rate high. Fasting cannot...

Need to eliminate the big losses

Your maths are correct. But my suspicion whenever I hear of a trader with a massive win:loss imbalance, like 1:6, is that they didn't plan for 6, it was just where the pain got too bad and they exited at a random price tick. The loss could then as easily have been 3x or 4.5x or 10x. Yes, its...

I think we've already decided that whatever the funds do, we have at least the possibility of doing better.
