Excel programs run on your PC (client) while server-side stops run on machines that sit right beside the execution servers. The speed disadvantage of client-side stops will cost you enormously (in slippage) over the course of a year if you do any kind of volume.

We can agree to disagree but the point stands that Genesis is losing business because they don't have them. I know 1/2 dozen people who do volume and are looking for a new firm, but won't trade with Genesis because they don't have stops.

That's not accurate. The use of stops depend on your trading methodology. For example, if you trade several positions at one time, server-side stops (as opposed to specialist stops) are absolutely critical. I know a good number of people off the top of my head that utilize stops and do over...

Anyone have any idea whatsoever when Genesis will add server-side stops for Nasdaq stocks? How long does it take to program and test software that sends buy and sell orders when a price is touched? Seems like stops have been a constant request and on their to-do list forever...but they...

Actually the delay is 30 seconds but they're getting rid of it altogether when Reg NMS arrives next spring/summer. About time too. Can you imagine how brilliant the NYSE must be to alienate traders with such an asinine restriction in the age of millisecond trading?

Yep, as mentioned, it depends on where you send the stop order. For example, if you use REDI+, stops sent to the NYSE are triggered by the last trade price. Stops sent to SIGMA (which uses ARCA) are triggered by the bid or ask (e.g. a $10 sell stop is triggered when the bid is <= $10.

Do you have to put any money down? Can you get this deal and trade remote? Any volume minimums, fine print, or other BS?

If these are the only two choices, then Bright hands down (assuming you can get a good rate from them). As a trader who used to trade there I have all the respect in the world for Bob Bright, who is a man of his word--which means a lot to me at least... ...and REDI ain't THAT bad anymore...

IB's new commissions are great as long as you don't do a ton of 1-lots. In that case their $1 minimum sucks the big one. On another note, does anyone know if Genesis has server-side stops yet???

Full auto-ex is long overdue at the NYSE. A lot of people won't trade listed names simply because of the slowness and specialist intervention. (Not including the daytraders that utilize a strategy of "being on the same side" as the specialist). One little annoyance for momentum traders...

Bout time. Listed issues have been trading on Naz forever anyways.
