Why FXCM is dead and GAIN is survived?

GAIN Capital, the forex broker similar to FXCM, is ticker GCAP not GAIN (the latter is a business development company, basically a lender to small or shaky businesses). My understanding was that GAIN Capital had higher margin requirements and hence was better protected from their customers...

    FXCM stock discussion

I lost a little so far long, but may make it back on shorts and short calls. Either way, it'll be better than this guy: http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1499912/000114420415005036/xslF345X03/v400014_4.xml Director at FXCM gets his own personal margin call and sells $15M (pre-crash)...

How do you manage gap risk on your overnight stock positions?

At the very least, hedge your book to dollar neutral or beta neutral with ETFs. They're cheap to trade, cheap to borrow, and have super low capital requirements.

At least they are good burgers! More than can be said for some companies worth more.

Thanks, Daal. I had misread it. Might consider shorting outright instead of short bias options.

    FXCM stock discussion

Took some long losses, considering a short view but not wild about the 100% borrow. Worth a look here. http://www.streetinsider.com/Analyst Comments/Come to Your Senses... FXCM (FXCM) is Worth No More than $0.85Share - Analyst/10189369.html Edit: misread the borrow, more like 8%.

'Davos people – source of economic problems, not a solution'

A real economic journalist would not use (invent?) the word "banksterism". This is just some angry leftist ranting, punctuated with admissions he has no idea about economics.

    FXCM stock discussion

Anything at the right price. Even if they lose some customers, there will still be a sucker born every minute and retail forex trading is a great way to take their money. I don't think that's going to change any time soon.

    FXCM LOSES ALL EQUITY

They've got 2 years to prove they've cleaned up their risk controls and then they can likely refinance whatever they still need in terms of regulatory capital at rates better than 10% interest secured by everything that can be nailed down.

IB loses $120M from Swiss currency move

I was able to buy some in the after hours. It was halted during the day, but that was lifted around 4:30pm. http://www.nasdaqtrader.com/Trader.aspx?id=Tradehalts

IB loses $120M from Swiss currency move

FXCM is back up to nearly $5 on news of a bailout / capital infusion from LUK. Looking like it might be a buy - they might deserve to lose 1/3 their market cap if that's how much they lost, but they're down by 2/3 even now in the after hours once the news came. Leucadia National Corporation (...

IB loses $120M from Swiss currency move

Lots of leveraged FX speculators getting wiped out, and this was the excess loss that will fall on IB if they don't recover from the individuals some how. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/interactive-brokers-lost-120-million-150612206.html About 2.5% of their equity, so the 6% selloff in IBKR...

IB Tax Info Availability - 2014

Date you get your last revision to your 1099B - November, and maybe still counting, at least if 2013 was any guide. That's not IB's fault of course, it's a function of what you owned and how late they were about characterizing the nature of distributions and such.

    Spoofing becoming illegal

You mean that you trade against them when they're wrong about the price? That would sure put a hole in all these regulators' "non bono fide orders" line.

Prevent a tax nightmare for your retirement plan

Yes, UBTI issues effect Roth IRAs just like any other IRA. Why people would put the tax advantaged distributions from MLPs in an IRA instead of taxable is beyond me. It's like the people who try to buy houses with their self-directed IRA so they can give up tons of RE tax breaks for individuals...

What Sharpe ratio do we need?

Good enough for what? Anything over 1 is probably good enough to invest your own money in, at least some of it, if you believe it really works. The advantage of a higher Sharpe is that it's more likely that you've got something "real" instead of some spurious back tested pattern that will...
