Lime Brokerage fined $625k by FINRA

Sounds like they do “encourage quoted liquidity” though if they get these guys to post huge orders. One day someone will take them up on them. But in this case, these were all stock exchanges using price/time AFAICT.

What’s that one instance, in case we should be aware of it?

    IB close-out advisory

I’d be happy to hear something definitive also. My impression was that US buy-in were handled via VWAP starting 10-15 minutes after the open (not via MOO). this seems quite reasonable compared to some other brokers.

    IB close-out advisory

The available shares to borrow change from day to day. There is no guarantee that shares available today will be there tomorrow, or that shares you short will be either. IB’s figures reflect their information at the time, but that can change and sometimes quickly. If you’re shorting stuff...

    IB close-out advisory

What part did you not understand of the risks they describe, in the link given? The regulations governing short selling require the brokers to buy back shares if they can’t be borrowed (no “naked shorting”). IB will give you a warning, if they can, via the “close out advisory”, and you can...

Interactive Brokers implemented order size filters

Thank you to everyone who took the time to complain to IB on this issue. As of yesterday, the size limits are off again pending “recalibration”. Hopefully they will either give up on this or make the limits much less restrictive.

Interactive Brokers implemented order size filters

Next thing you're going to be telling me that I can’t execute trades better than a smart router. Let me make my own decisions about what’s in my interest - why take the choice away from the investor? If they feel like they have to do something, make it some setting feature that you can turn...

Interactive Brokers implemented order size filters

This super annoying. I was stopped from placing an order for more than $6k worth due this dumb limit. Yes you can break up your order, but now the commissions are higher, it’s more trouble, and execution is quite likely worse. The worst part is there is no such regulatory obligation! No...

About to get fired, and need to make estimated tax payments for my stock sales. What to do?

It’s an interest penalty at 6% annual rate, not a flat 6%, and it’s based only on the amount short below equally paid quarterly amounts of your tax due and what you actually paid, not the total amount. I think the withholdings count equally for each quarter, so say you end up withholding $10k...

Shorting stock gains considered capital gains or income in the United States?

This is incorrect on several points. First, short selling results in capital gains, not income. Yes, short term gains are often the same as income, tax wise, but not always (you could offset more STCGs with prior year capital losses, for example). Second, the timing rules are such that short...

About to get fired, and need to make estimated tax payments for my stock sales. What to do?

Ok, so you only need to hit 100% not 110%. I’m not a tax expert, but this is what I’d do: 1. Put 7k from your paychecks towards CA, bringing your total up to $9k, 100% of last year. Adjust this to be at least whatever the exact number was for your “$9k” CA 2018 tax liability. 2. If you can...

About to get fired, and need to make estimated tax payments for my stock sales. What to do?

Just a quick check - did you make more than $150k in AGI for 2018? I’m trying to see if you need to hit 110% for the withholding safe harbor vs just 100% of last year’s tax liability.

About to get fired, and need to make estimated tax payments for my stock sales. What to do?

Yes, withholdings are treated as being made evenly regardless of when they are actually withheld. This helps even things out in situations like yours. If you take care of CA with your last paycheck or two, you should also aim to hit 110% of last year’s Federal number (assuming 2019 is looking...

About to get fired, and need to make estimated tax payments for my stock sales. What to do?

You can still make estimated payments to both CA or Feds for Q3 or Q4, so you don’t need to get the whole year paid up to avoid penalties. If you’re trying to avoid penalties, I would still withhold as much as you can out of your remaining paychecks. Especially if CA charges a higher penalty...

    Client library for TDAmeritrade?

TDA does have an API. https://www.tdameritrade.com/api.page That said, I have heard it’s a difficult process to get set up to use it. If anyone currently uses it, I’d be happy to hear their comments and experience.

Any 529 fund that has option trading possibility?

You can go ESA->529 taxfree as long as you double check the rules on beneficiaries, but not v versa. The low ESA limit is a drag, and you can’t easily avoid it by using a 529 because of the lack of transfer that way. You can do a mix I guess, if you’ve got extra cash to invest thst won’t...

Any 529 fund that has option trading possibility?

Those are taxable custodial accounts for minors, and can be invested and traded. I’m not sure about getting options permissions, but you can ask various retail brokers what they allow for those accounts. Most offer them.
