Reminiscences of Hard Times to Come

Heh. Interesting - read that a few months ago to get a perspective of what might be coming. Important to note that not everyone did poorly during the depression. Also, read 'judgment day' from the studs lonigan trilogy. Will share the main take-home point I got from this piece of...

M3 up 50%, fed can suck up excess liquidity later???

Not to be glib, but what hasn't been done here? -aggressive easing to zero rate -commercial paper purchases -direct injections of liquidity - while purchasing of the long end of the curve hasn't been admitted, I would not be surprised if it has already happened. -

how do I buy stock for a friend

Well, since you obviously want to be 'married' to the stock, I suggest picking something currently sexy like solar energy, alternative energy, or fertilizer. Just don't come crying to us when your new best friend stock is all down in the dumps all the time and has gone from a P/E of 70 to...

Citigroup seeks "emergency cash" from U.S. Treasury

Wasn't there a rumor (or a bit more than a rumor) that Citi approached GS about a merger earlier this fall? If GS knows citi's position/balance sheets/structure, would it not make sense to wait, just like JPM did? Pick it up for under $5, instead of $20-$30? Now this is pure speculation...

How does one intelligently hedge against the risk of a US Dollar collapse?

Concur with pabst about Au. Other industrial metals might be a hedge, but so illiquid that who knows how you would get out of them. I haven't grasped this sufficiently to comment . I'm somewhat partial to holding unhedged foreign government bonds. Look what happened to US treasuries...

WTF just happened- asia up big?!?!

What about asian CB intervention in the equity markets? Think about it - US market seems poised to collapse on an option expiration day particularly with the nasty sell off on the close. You can't intervene in US any more with US market closed, so go to asia and do it there. Asia up...
