PATTERNS -- So These REALLY Work???

Don't blame Samson, he didn't resurrect this dead thread.

    Food for thought: vega

What I don't get is how they justify ignoring the underlying asset drift. The lognormal assumption is bad enough but you can kind of rationalize it as a "needed" simplification. But if the asset drift is also ignored, how is that not insanely unrealistic?

$ trail stop and % trail stop

Used for taking your money. :) Seriously, the only trailing stops worth a damn are those based on volatility, e.g., ATR multiples. I prefer Chuck LeBeau's chandelier stop. YMMV.

historical data for OEX and NDX

I think implied volatility depends on the pricing model you assume. What is your pricing model?

I am after a EOD data provider

Seeing as how their historical data comes from csidata, I think they're being deliberately screwed. Makes me think twice before signing up with csidata.

I am after a EOD data provider

Smart move. Yahoo's historical volume data for the DJIA and the S&P500 composite are identical. Yeah, that fills me with confidence.

    How I Make Decisions

Assclown, all that matters is the bottom line. Read Van Tharp's book re reliability versus expectancy, before putting your ignorance on display again.

    How I Make Decisions

LOL! Exactly. "My goal is to make money 52% of the time." Funny, I thought the goal of a successful trader was to maximize gains, not the number of times you are "right". You can be "right" 70% of the time in calling market direction and still wind up a loser. That guy needs a reality...

    Backtesting Platform for Non Programmers

I don't know anything about this company but it might be worth a look: http://www.compuvision.com.au/index.htm

    Arbitrage type strategies.

Pardon my ignorance but does that include spread trading? There's a guy posting a spread trading journal in the Journals forum -- is he just blowing smoke at us? TIA.

    Momentum Strategies

In other words, 'momentum strategy' is just a "power phrase" for trend following. I'm continually amused by all the macho posturing and pseudo-scientific posing by the economystic community, the financial sub-culture being no exception to the rest of economystics in that regard. :D :D :D

    Chop vs. Trend

The efficiency ratio is a measure of trend quality, not rate of trend. In other words, all monotonically increasing curves will have a ker of +1, regardless of rate of increase, and all monotonically decreasing curves will have a ker of -1, regardless of rate of decrease. I hope this helps.

    Chop vs. Trend

You're welcome. :) I confess that I haven't used ker much in its basic form. I imagine it will always miss a portion of a move because it is not a predictor of the next trend, it is a detector of the current trend. I personally would never to use it as a counter-trend indicator. I used...

Looking for a back testing library

Here's a book that does a lot of backtesting. Apparently he supplies pseudo-codes that you can probably easily translate to c/c++. I don't think there are too many generic backtests outside of proprietary scripts. I have one for a spreadsheet if interested. Good luck with your search...

The basic nature of Technical Analysis

I agree. The main value of TA is to separate the price signal (what's important) from the price noise (what's not). The trick is to find the small segment of TA that actually does that.

The basic nature of Technical Analysis

I'm a freethinker. We render verdicts on everything. And that's exactly what you've been doing as well, as is your right. One would have appreciated more intelligent responses, but yours have been amusing all the same. BTW your utter failure to actually address the issues has been duly...

The basic nature of Technical Analysis

Let's take a look: "What people fail to understand is the following; "1. Concepts to not always reduce to "black or white", "on or off", "yes or no"." Yes, and so what? What is exactly is the relevance of this cliché to the discussion at hand? VERDICT: UNCLEAR "2. The...

The basic nature of Technical Analysis

You appear to contradict yourself. Either the effectiveness depends on the practitioner, or the tools matter as well. It's probably a combination. The best surgeon in the world won't do a first-class appendectomy using a butter knife. I'm all for people doing their own homework. In fact...
