''teach Me To Trade'' Workshop Informercial

I finally caught one of those snake-oil pitches the other night, and almost bust my sides laughing so hard. There must be more suckers watching late-nite TV than even P. T. Barnum thought possible for there to still be a market for that crap after all these years.

Timing the market with Bollinger Bands

An indicator-based trading system means nothing without a valid backtest: 30 or more trades (after subtracting the number of optimized parameters), plus reasonable assumptions for commissions and slippage. I had the "Holy Grail" indicator until I added a realistic commission to my backtest...

    Portfolio backtesting

The trading will be eod so the bars will be daily. I'd prefer a spreadsheet solution because that is how my indicator values are generated, but I'll settle for a commercial program that will do portfolio backtesting while allowing input of separate indicator values for each stock. Otherwise...

    Portfolio backtesting

Thanks for your reply, horribilicus. :) Do you know if that works for portfolio backtesting where there will be a separate indicator column for each stock in the portfolio? I'd like to backtest at least 10 years for a basket of about 30 stocks. TIA.

    Portfolio backtesting

Any ideas on what to use for an outside-generated indicator that can be imported? I'm looking for a commercial program that will do the backtesting or a spreadsheet/custom program. TIA.

Buy High, Sell Higher vs. Buy Low, Sell High

This is just the latest round of the ol' support/resistence-versus-momentum argument. It all depends on which one a trader believes matters more: price level or price change. Like beauty, it's in the eye of the beholder. Move along, folks, nothing to see here. :p

Wanting to start a systematic trading approach

I tried posting the following as an attachment but all the formating disappeared. Let's try it again: The following spreadsheet template is for backtesting an eod stock trading strategy. The first 7 columns are the free eod stock data from finance.yahoo.com "999" is just a sample...

Wanting to start a systematic trading approach

Batman got it right. Excel is all you need. People who keep telling you to buy this expensive sw or that complicated package are either people too lazy to think for themselves or hucksters looking to sell you something. All you need is a spreadsheet backtest template to test whatever...

If there is a quantitative measure for Edge, what is it?

"Edge" is just a synonym for positive expectation aka a winning trading strategy. Want an edge? Get the following: A strategy with a backtest of at least 30 trades after subtracting the number of optimized parameters; A net profit at the end of the backtest; A greater profit than...

    How Much to invest Analysis

Why do you believe this stock has 5x potential in the next 1-2 years? If your belief is based on fundamental analysis, I hope your analysis is correct, but FA says nothing about timing. If your belief is based on technical analysis, then you must have done some backtesting to validate your...

    Adjusted data

 I use AmiQuote and it downloads all 7 columns from Yahoo. Mine is version 1.7.1. What's yours?

    Adjusted data

According to yahoo, their final column ("Adj. Close*") in their historical stock prices download is adjusted for splits and dividends. Do you have a specific example where, say, a stock split occurred but yahoo didn't adjust for it?

Price Action. Please clarify something for me

Most technical analysts use the word "indicator" to mean an involved mathematical formula based on price or volume or both. The fact is that the raw data, price and volume, are themselves also indicators. The usual purpose of the complicated formulae is to smooth out the noise in the raw data...

pros and cons of these forex brokers

http://www.gummy-stuff.org/ gummy explains Kelly better than anyone else I've seen, including Ed Thorp. I agree! :)

Price Action. Please clarify something for me

Bushwa. TA is not one-size-fits-all. Ignore the bleeters saying "you don't want indicators" or "only Method X works". Most TA *is* garbage but you're never going to get universal agreement on what parts are garbage and what parts are not. So the best you can do for yourself is to widely...

pros and cons of these forex brokers

Good money management is sizing your trade to match your edge. AFAICT, not all FX brokers are the same. You seem to think otherwise. So are you hanging out in this forum just to piss on everybody's parade, like some anti-TA posters love to hang out in the TA forum all the time? No. A...

pros and cons of these forex brokers

No, not enough said. What force? Somebody in FX got a gun pointed at your head, forcing you to take 100:1 leverage? Intelligent Kelly sizing never gets anywhere the ridiculous leverage offered by FX brokers, including OandA's smaller limit of 50:1. Trade smartly, not greedily.

pros and cons of these forex brokers

Spoken like a true elitist. First of all, screw daytrading. Not everybody wants or needs to trade that way. Second, who are you to decide what's being "too greedy"? Doing the job properly means having a good strategy/money-management set, not just having some arbitrary >$XK account. Of...
